All Time Greats

Thought I would pose a few questions to everyone out there.

Who is the best coach in the Huron League ever and why? (How about I preface this and say since 1970) Here are some to think about: Tom Fagan (T), Larry Dugan (FR), Joe Sanderson (CC), Don Lessner (R), Marc Cisco (J), Eric Redmond (A), and Jack Giarmo (SMCC).

Who is the best player in the League since 1970 and why? Here are some to think about: Dave Steffan (FR), Jack Giarmo (CC), Kevin Oliver (CC), Mike Williams (J) Blake Smolen (GI), Darryl Mossburg (A) Joe Rice (H), Ron Spears (M) Adam Servey (J), Derek Anderson (A), Joe Drennan (GC), Tyler Weclowski (H), Jake Frysinger (GI) and Lee Wilder (J).

Monroe County All Star Game

The Monroe County All Star game will be played at 7 pm this Friday June 18th at Bedford High School. Six of the eight Huron League schools will be represented and will play for the North All Stars along with members of Carlson.

The South team will be made up of players from Bedford, Monroe, Ida, Erie Mason, Dundee, Whiteford and Summerfield.

It will be interesting to see how certain players do in the all star game. I for one would like to see SMCC's Mike Howey throw the ball a bit. It will also be interesting to see TJ Lovell and Tyler Weclowski as part of the same LB corp.

A match up I would like to see would be Flat Rock's Joe Conner defending Summerfield's Eric Cogan in the open field. I'm not sure how much passing we will see from the South but I have to imagine they will try and get the ball to the versatile Cogan.

If you want to catch a glimpse of the North All Stars they will be practicing all this week at New Boston Huron at 6 pm.

What Factors Make Football Programs Successful?

I'm sure there are many factors that make a program successful. But what is the biggest factor for success? Is it talent? Coaching? Parents? How about commitment? Scheme? Weight training? Money?

Is there one factor that stands out? Let's here your opinions.

I personally think that it is coaching. High school football more than any sport relies on good solid coaching. How else can you explain programs being consistent winners? Great coaches usually are knowledgeable, respected and committed.

One coach that comes to mind for me is Eric Redmond. For years Airport struggled in football. It wasn't until Redmond arrived that the Jets tasted success. Did the Jets suddenly find talent? We may need to wait a few years before we really know. If Monroe starts to experience success and Airport starts to stumble I think we will have our answer.

Another example was Larry Dugan at Flat Rock. Dugan was the Monroe County Region coach of the decade for the 1970's with a State title and 3 league championships. The 80's started where the 70's left off with 13 wins in 2 years before Dugan abruptly left. The Rams have only experienced winning seasons 6 times in the last 29 seasons with no league titles.

I'm sure there are other factors but coaching is #1 on my list. What are your thoughts?
