Friday Night Scores

Airport 28 Riverview 20
SMCC 32 Huron 22
Milan 38 Jefferson 14

Obviously I put the poll up for a reason regarding the Michigan/Alabama game. Can those of you who voted for Michigan please explain to me why the Wolverines will win the game? I just don't see it. Now I do realize why fans vote a certain way for their team but please let's here some solid input on why Michigan will win this game.

Blog Decorum

I usually post this every year but please note that I do not allow some comments to come through and be posted on the blog. This is for numerous reasons. I don't want the blog to turn into a bashing forum. We can save that for mlive or twitter.

Players are off limits to call out and be critical of. They are just kids who are playing a game that they happen to love. I usually allow some criticism of coaches and their coaching decisions because they are paid professionals. They know this and most don't seem to mind.

Also, if you ever need to contact me you can send me an email @ I get tons of fan mail on a daily basis.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Thursday Night Scores

Grosse Ile 28 Flat Rock 3

Airport 50 Riverview 7
SMCC 42 Huron 6

Milan 47 Jefferson 6
Riverview 22 Airport 20
SMCC 39 Huron 12

Airport at Riverview

This is a match up of two of the top teams in the league. Last week the Jets made a nice comeback at Adrian and escaped with a 25-24 win. The Pirates jumped out to a quick lead on Crestwood but had to hang on in the 2nd half to win 30-28. Airport won last season's battle at home 35-7.

Airport has a solid ground attack and can throw the ball when needed to. Defensively the Jets will be one of the best in the league again and this is why many have them tabbed to capture the title.

Riverview has plenty of speed in the backfield but was dominated up front last week in the 2nd half. The Pirates will have to do a better job against the run and stay away from mistakes if they plan on upsetting the Jets.

This is an intriguing match up because of the caliber of last weeks opponents. Airport won against a strong team and program while Riverview struggled against a perennial losing program. There may be more to the game tonight as Airport may be a bit shorthanded. Pick: Airport 28 Riverview 21

Wednesday Night Scores

Grosse Ile 30 Flat Rock 0
Jefferson 44 Romulus 22

Huron at SMCC

The Falcons opened the season at home with a 44-6 win over Detroit PEC while the Chiefs were forced to accept a 2-0 forfeit over Dearborn Heights Annapolis. SMCC won last year's meeting in New Boston by a score of 12-6

SMCC won't change what they have been doing from over the years. They still have the best coach in the league in Jack Giarmo. The Falcons have a stable of running backs and will simply ride the hot hand most of the game.  Defensively the Falcons will be physical as usual while trying to force turnovers.

Rust may be the biggest concern for the Chiefs after they were dealt a forfeit win over Annapolis last week. Fullback Steve Curnett will likely shoulder most of the load for Huron offensively. Overall team speed will be one of the strengths for the Chiefs in this game and could have a hand in the outcome.

This is an interesting matchup. Last year's game was a defensive struggle but this game will most likely feature more scoring. Both teams are probably a year away from fielding really strong teams but the victor may have something to say in the season's league race. Pick: SMCC 30 Huron 28

Grosse Ile at Flat Rock

Grosse Ile opened the season with a 42-21 victory at Onsted last week while Flat Rock opened the Tom Oestrike era with a 12-7 loss to Ida. Grosse Ile won last season's match up on the Island 51-12.

Grosse Ile dominated  an inexperienced Wildcat team last week by running for over 300 yards. The Red Devils were pretty one dimensional, as they only threw the ball four times at Onsted. That may have been by design as Onsted only returned five defensive starters from last years 3-6 squad.

Flat Rock is coming off of a disappointing loss to Ida. The Rams dominated the line of scrimmage against a team that qualified for the playoffs last season. Flat Rock must find a way to improve in the red zone as they converted only one of five trips in scoring territory.

This could be an interesting match up. The Red Devils certainly have had more success recently but Flat Rock has twenty-two seniors on the roster. Grosse Ile will most likely have to throw the ball a bit more this week if they want to move the ball. Pick: Grosse Ile 27 Flat Rock 21

Milan at Jefferson

Both teams enter the Huron League opener in a different frame of mind. Milan crushed Ypsi in week one by a score of 42-8. The Bears were beaten badly at home by Tecumseh 49-14. Milan beat Jefferson last season in week two 25-13.

Jefferson led last week 14-7 after one quarter but the Indians took to the air and that spelled doom for the Bears. The defense held up well against the rush and that should be enough to keep them in the game this week.

Milan did most of their damage on the ground last week against Ypsi although the Big Reds appear capable of throwing the ball. Coach Jesse Hoskins must find a way to get the ball to Arthur Dukes on the ground while throwing enough to keep Jefferson off balance.

Conventional wisdom says to go with Milan after week one but something makes me think the Bears will win this game. Maybe it's the home field advantage or maybe it's the fact that Cisco has been coaching nearly twice as long as Hoskins has been alive.  Pick: Jefferson 21 Milan 20

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Impressive win by Milan over Ypsilanti

Same goes for Airport over Adrian

Shame on Annapolis

Did Grosse Ile really only throw four passes against Onsted?

Either Riverview isn't very good or Crestwood has improved

Did Jefferson really get rolled by Tecumseh?

Tough to tell if SMCC has improved (I would like to see them schedule PEC in hoops)

Flat Rock deserved to win that game against Ida

I have to believe that Airport is the favorite to win the league (the fan poll agrees with me)

How good is Grosse Ile?

Do I DVR the MSU/Bosie State game Friday and catch a high school game?

Do I bother watching the Alabama/Michigan game next Saturday?
