Lincoln Park/Taylor Kennedy

I have a bonus pick today. This is a battle between two winless teams. Lincoln Park lost last week to Woodhaven 40-14 while Kennedy lost to Southgate Anderson 35-28. Kennedy won last season over the Railsplitters 18-13.

Most know that Lincoln Park is in the midst of the longest losing streak in the nation. The Downriver League has been tough for them because they must play 9 league games per year. Jim Kalbfleisch was hired last season to end the streak.

Kennedy is a team that finished 3-6 last season but is without veteran coach Brian Obrycki who has taken this season off due to family committments.

Lincoln Park's losing streak has reached a monumental 57 games but this may be the week the Railsplitters taste victory for the first time since week two of the 2006 season. Pick: Lincoln Park 21 Taylor Kennedy 20

Grosse Ile @ Jefferson

These teams appear to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. Grosse Ile (4-1) is coming off of a 28-14 win over Airport while Jefferson (1-4) is still stinging from a 38-3 loss to Huron. Grosse Ile won last season 41-12.

Jefferson has a good running game but it is the defense that will need to step up if they want to beat the Islanders.

Grosse Ile just keeps plugging along. A good offense and a very good defense can take you a long way.

This could be the easiest pick of the season but could be a trap game for the Devils. Pick: Grosse Ile 28 Jefferson 7

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

SMCC @ Riverview

Both teams are coming off of losses. SMCC (3-2) lost at home to Milan 35-22 while Riverview (2-3) fell at Flat Rock 38-3. The Pirates won last season's game 31-29.

SMCC keeps getting better and most likely lost to a better team in Milan last week. The Falcon ground game should give the porous Pirate run defense problems this week.

Up until last week Riverview proved they could score points using their speed. The defense was shredded by Flat Rock last week and much of the season.

Riverview's Jeff Stergalas is a coach who can usually match wits with veteran SMCC coach Jack Giarmo. This game could be a runaway but I see it as being a close game. Pick: SMCC 30 Riverview 21

Huron @ Airport

Both teams appear to be headed in different directions. The Airport Jets (3-2) are coming off of a two touchdown loss to Grosse Ile while the Huron Chiefs (2-3) are fresh off a blowout win over Jefferson. The Jets won last season's battle 35-14.

Airport's offensive and defensive numbers are down from last season. The running game has not clicked like in year's past and the defense has given up an uncharacteristic 23 ppg.

Huron's defense has struggled most of the season but the Chiefs may have righted the ship in last week's win over Jefferson. The running game continues to be effective.

Both teams need a win this week or they could see their playoff dreams possibly broken for 2012. Nobody has played more homecoming games as the sacrificial lamb than Huron has over the years. Airport may have made a mistake this season. Pick: Huron 21 Airport 20

Monday, September 24, 2012

Milan @ Flat Rock

Both teams are coming off of solid victories last week. Milan continued their worst to first travels by improving to 5-0 with a convincing 35-20 victory over SMCC while Flat Rock (2-3) put together a win streak for the first time since the 2009 season after beating Riverview 38-3. Flat Rock won last season's contest 21-14 which was their first over Milan since 1967.

Milan appears to be in the drivers seat for this year's league championship. The Big Reds continued with a solid offensive output last week behins the legs of Arthur Dukes and the arm of Justin Aceves. Milan also boast one of the best defenses in the league while yielding just over 13 ppg.

The Rams seem to be playing their best football in years led by first year Head Coach and 2001 Flat Rock graduate Tom Oestrike. The Rams are led by a physical defense that yields just 14 ppg and rugged running back Mike Blosser.

This won't be an easy road for the league leading Big Reds. Flat Rock will be fired up for their homecoming and boast a solid run defense. I'll be there hanging with some old friends. Pick: Milan 21 Flat Rock 14

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Milan didn't fool me this week.

What is going on at Riverview?

Grosse Ile sophomore QB Andrew Mitroka is a star already.

What is going on at Jefferson?

SMCC is probably a year away.

Will Flat Rock give Milan a game this week?

Airport is going to have to beat undefeated Milan or Tecumseh to have a shot at the playoffs.

Can Huron play that way two weeks in a row?

Is this still a coaches league? Gone are Redmond and Robb while Cisco and Stergalas don't seem to be the same.

Week Five Stars

Here are a few of the top performances from around the Huron League this weekend.

Mike Blosser, the senior RB from Flat Rock (2-3) ran for 252 yards and three touchdowns in the Ram's 38-3 thrashing of Riverview.

Arthur Dukes, the senior RB from Milan (5-0) ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns as the Big Reds won a battle for first place against SMCC 35-20.

Jacob Bailey, the senior LB from Huron (2-3) recorded 12 tackles in the Chief's 40-6 victory over Jefferson in New Boston last night.

Jordan Nellenbach, the speedy senior RB from Grosse Ile (4-1) rushed for 130 yards and caught 4 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in the Red Devils 28-14 victory over Airport.

Milan @ SMCC

Both teams are coming off impressive victories last week. Milan (4-0) nipped undefeated Grosse Ile last week 21-14 while SMCC (3-1) rolled over previously unbeaten Airport 37-7. The Falcons won last season's contest 39-14.

Milan contiues to surprise everyone including this bumblehead. Milan has a solid defense and an offense that can run or throw the ball.

SMCC is getting better every week. The Falcons have gotten healthier and the offense has gotten better.

This is a great match up and will go a long way in determining who wins the league. SMCC at home seems like a good pick but Milan keeps making me look foolish. Pick: Milan 24 SMCC 22

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Airport @ Grosse Ile

Airport (3-1) is coming off a thrashing at the hands of SMCC 37-7 while Grosse Ile (3-1) lost at Milan 21-14. Airport won last season's game in Carleton 28-14.

Airport looks to pick up the pieces and stay in the league race at Grosse Ile. The defense must get better this week while the offense searches for a spark that has been missing since week 2.

Grosse Ile is hoping to bounce back after losing to a solid Milan team. The Islanders aren't big but boast a very capable offense and defense.

In what appears to be a wide open league race the winner of this match up will still have a shot at the league crown. Another tight game but home field has to mean something. Pick: Grosse Ile 28 Airport 21.

Riverview @ Flat Rock

Both of these teams are coming off wins last week. Flat Rock (1-3) defeated Jefferson 28-20 while Riverview (2-2) downed Huron 28-27. The Pirates won last season's game in Riverview 41-29.

Riverview is a team that has baffled many. The Pirates have a solid offense that can score but the defense has been less than stellar.

Flat Rock has been better than anyone expected this season but still only boast a 1-3 record. The defense is solid and the offense is improving.

This is another game that could go either way. Give me the team that plays better defense. Pick Flat Rock 21 Riverview 20

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Jefferson @ Huron

Both teams are coming off close losses and each limps into this game with a 1-3 record. Huron fell short on a comeback  28-27 when a 2-point conversion failed with 42 seconds to go. Jefferson fell to Flat Rock for the second consecutive year 28-20. Jefferson won last year's meeting in Monroe 35-7.

Jefferson continues to struggle on the defensive side of the ball and are giving up a whopping 39 ppg. Offensively the ground game continues to click.

Huron has struggled defensively as well but has been able to move the ball on the ground effectively and somewhat through the air.

This is pretty much a pick'em game. The Bears rolled the Chiefs at home last year while Huron did basically the same two years ago. Tough call, anyone can win the game in the Huron League this year. Pick: Huron 28 Jefferson 27

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Looks like SMCC might be back.

Milan is a better team with Justin Aceves back in the line up.

When was the last time Airport lost that bad?

Flat Rock has now won two in a row over Jefferson.

Should you go for two to win the game? Absolutely!

I think a one loss team will most likely win the league championship.

Can Grosse Ile and Airport rebound? One will, one won't

Will Riverview make the playoffs?

State sucked last night.

Grosse Ile @ Milan

Both teams enter this matchup at 3-0. Milan hammered Huron last week 35-8 while Grosse Ile beat SMCC 21-15. The Red Devils won last year's contest 41-32.

Milan looked unbeatable against the Chiefs last week. The Big Reds literally ran the ball every play except when needed. Arthur Dukes is easily the best player in the Huron League while the defense is solid.

Grosse Ile is a team that just finds a way to win. They run the ball almost exclusively and the defense is just good enough.

I am not sold on the Islanders as of yet and Jesse Hoskins has done a wonderful job of turning things around after last year's debacle at Milan. With that said, I'm going to play a hunch this week. Pick:Grosse Ile 28 Milan 27

SMCC @ Airport

The Falcons fell to 2-1 last week after losing to Grosse Ile 21-15 while Airport improved to 3-0 after beating pesky Flat Rock 14-7. Airport won last season's matchup 28-7.

SMCC let a 15-0 halftime lead get away from them last week. The Falcons will continue doing what they do, which is, running the ball. The defense is pretty solid and will need to be again this week.

Airport continues to roll even though they struggled a little bit last week. Look for the Jets to throw the ball some more against the Falcons.

This is a big rivalry game and should bring out the best in both teams. Normally I would give the edge to the home team but give me the veteran coach this time. Pick: SMCC 22 Airport 21

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Huron @ Riverview

Both teams limp into this game with 1-2 records. Huron lost last week to Milan 35-8 while Riverview lost to Jefferson 51-41. Riverview won last season's matchup 20-14.

Huron has been able to run the ball this season but have struggled when throwing the ball. Defensively Huron has given up a lot of yardage on the ground.

Offensively Riverview has a ton of speed and should put up some points. Defensively the Pirates have struggled all season trying to stop teams from running between the tackles.

Another intriguing matchup this week. The winner keeps their playoff hopes alive while the loser would most likely be on the outside looking in. Pick: Riverview 23 Huron 21

Flat Rock @ Jefferson

The Rams (0-3) nearly pulled off the unthinkable last week in their 14-7 loss to Airport. The Bears (1-2) made a statement last week by beating Riverview 51-41 for their first victory of the season. Flat Rock won last season's game 21-19.

Flat Rock was able to play a full game defensively last week but the offense continues to slow the Rams down. The Rams are hoping to get a win this week after facing three teams that are a combined 9-0.

Somebody awoke the Bears from their hibernation last week as Jefferson got the ground game going for record setting performance. Defensively the Bears still have some work to do but this could be a good week to get better.

Tough call here. Flat Rock has a better defense than Jefferson while the Bears have the better offense. This game should be just like last season. I continue to be amazed at the preparation Tom Oestrike puts in at my Alma Mater. I'll go with the same score as last season. Pick: Flat Rock 21 Jefferson 19

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Milan being 3-0 is the biggest surprise of the season. They have a very nice team and seem to be well coached. Boy was I wrong on that one.

Flat Rock is 0-3 but their opponents (Ida, GI and Airport) are 9-0.

Jefferson 51 Riverview 41 Are you freaking kidding me?

I think Grosse Ile is for real.

When is SMCC QB Michael Wilson coming back?

Huron didn't look very good Friday. I hope they get better.

How does Airport only score 14 points on the Alma Mater?

On second thought, the biggest surprise of the season was the Huron League AD's allowing Milan to drop their JV schedule. They should have refused to play their freshmen team and force them to play a JV schedule. The freshmen players could have moved up and played in the JV games.

Should I head down and see the Milan/GI game next Friday? Maybe not after my last comment. Oh well truth hurts.

Impressive win by Michigan over Air Force and their high school offense!

Rich Rod's Arizona team beat #18 Oklahoma State 59-38 to move to 2-0 on the season.

Jefferson @ Riverview

Jefferson is off the their first 0-2 start in 26 years after dropping last week's game to Milan. Riverview fell to 1-1 after falling to league favorite Airport 28-20. Riverview won last season's game 19-14.

Riverview has been running the ball well this season while the passing game is improving. The defense has been pushed around a bit this year and will have to improve if the Pirates plan on making the playoffs.

Jefferson's defense has been less than stellar the first two weeks. The Bears will need to improve which should allow the offense more opportunities.

This may be a trap game for the Pirates. Jefferson loves to run the ball and that could pose problems for Riverview. Pick: Riverview 21 Jefferson 19

Flat Rock @ Airport

Airport is coming off of a two big wins with the most recent being over Riverview 28-20. Flat Rock is off to an 0-2 start after dropping a 28-3 decision to Grosse Ile. Airport won last season's meeting 27-0.

Airport may be the class of the league right now. The Jets have an excellent running game as usual while throwing when needed. The defense has been giving up some points but those numbers will get better.

Flat Rock has had trouble finding the endzone the first two weeks. The running game is solid but mistakes have hurt the "O" in the redzone. Defensively the Rams are better than year's past.

This used to be a big rivalry but Airport has dominated the last few decades. Airport will only get better and the Rams probably won't have much to say about it this week. Pick: Airport 35 Flat Rock 14

SMCC at Grosse Ile

Both teams are off to 2-0 starts in what appears to be an early season key match up on the island. Grosse Ile struggled early in a 28-3 win over Flat Rock while SMCC beat a pesky Huron team 32-22.  The Red Devils won last year's meeting 20 -14.

Grosse Ile has a solid team but this year's edition is a little different. The Red Devils like to run the ball as much as possible while throwing the occasional bubble screen. The defense stingy and athletic.

SMCC appears to be back after their first losing season in over a decade. The Falcons will run the ball on almost every down. The defense is solid and should force the Islanders out of their comfort zone.

This is an intriguing matchup. The Falcons are looking for revenge after their eight game winning streak over the Devils was broken last year. A win for GI could mean another playoff run for a young reloading program. Pick:SMCC 29 Grosse Ile 21

Milan at Huron

Milan is off to a surprising 2-0 start after defeating Jefferson last week 38-14. Huron fell to 1-1 after losing to SMCC last week 32-22. The Chiefs won last year's meeting between these two teams 26-21 on a Joe Coffee TD catch in the games final seconds.

Milan has been riding a balanced offensive attack behind QB Justin Aceves and RB Arthur Dukes. The Big Reds appear capable of scoring in bunches but the defense has yet to be tested.

Huron showed a balanced offense last week with three different backs getting carries and QB Zach Schlarb airing out when neccessary. The defense will need to get better this week if they hope to contain Dukes.

Tough to tell where these two teams are based on the schedule but both teams appear to be pretty solid. Huron won a thriller last season. Look for this game to be somewhat high scoring. Pick: Milan 30 Huron 28

Michigan/Alabama Poll

Well that Poll shook out like I thought it would. Half of the readers are probably Michigan fans and the other half are probably not.

I can't believe anyone actually thought UM would win that game. Any impressions of the game?

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Is Milan for real or the beneficiary of playing two weak teams?

Is Airport in the drivers seat?

Huron's Demarcus Bunn had a solid game last night

Is Jefferson headed back to it's 70's success?

SMCC looked pretty solid last night.

Sounds like Riverview's speed kept them in the game last night.

Will Airport win the league with an interim coach?

Grosse Ile is gonna need to throw the ball more.

Flat Rock needs to throw over the middle a little bit.

Who is the most exciting player in the league?
