Grosse Ile @ Robichaud

Grosse Ile (9-1) is coming off of a 14-12 playoff victory over Chandler Park while Dearborn Heights Robichaud (9-1) defeated St. Clair Shores South Lake 41-6. Grosse Ile and Robichaud last met back in 2001 with the Islanders winning 31-6.

Robichaud, the champions of the Western Wayne Athletic Conference Red Division are led by senior QB Chris Davis. Davis has thrown for nearly 1,600 yards and 20 TD's this season. His main targets are  seniors Darius Phillips and Torin Anderson. Leading the ground attack for the Bulldogs is 900 yard rusher Cedric Patterson.

Defensively, the Bulldogs are led by the monstrous Marquis Clayton at DT. Robichaud boast a strong LB corp with Devonta Walker,  Jaisaun Simpkins and William Melchor. The Bulldogs give up a meager 12.5 ppg and their lone loss came at the hands of state football power Dearborn Fordson in week 8.

Grosse Ile is led by QB Andrew Mitroka. The sophomore runs the Red Devil spread attack efficiently and has thrown for 9 TD's against only 1 INT while rushing for 806 yards. Grosse Ile has two equally effective RB's in Brian Christen and Jordan Nellenbach.

On the defensive side of the ball Grosse Ile looks to Chris Trombley. The senior DT is one of the best players in the Huron League. Senior Keeton Ross is a rugged LB while junior DB Dan McCarty leads the Red Devils in tackles. Last week McCarty teamed with Nellenbach to shut down Chandler Park superstar and Michigan bound Csonte' York.

This should be an entertaining game and it could certainly go either way. Field conditions should be perfect as this game will be played on the beautiful turf field at Romulus Middle School. Pick: Grosse Ile 27 Robichaud 22

Tecumseh @ Milan

Milan (10-0) is coming off of a week one playoff victory over Huron League foe Airport 14-7. Tecumseh (8-2) is coming off of a come from behind victory over SEC White champion Chelsea 27-20. These two teams last met in 1999 when then SEC Milan beat Tecumseh 40-28.

Tecumseh has made a huge turn around under coach Al Romano after finishing 2-7 last season. Offensively, the Indians are led by QB Ben Dreslinski. The 6' 3" 190lb senior has thrown for over 1,900 yards and rushed for another 608 yards. The Indians have four seniors who have 20 or more catches in the lineup as Dreslinksi has thrown 22 TD's against only 6 INT's.

Defensively, Tecumseh is led by 6' 3" 220lb junior MLB Preston Pelham. The athletic junior leads the Indians in tackles with 123 while junior OLB Stephen Bloxam and senior CB John Terry provide athleticism for a defense that gives up just 16.3 ppg.

Milan, the Huron League champions are led offensively by senior RB Arthur Dukes III and passing QB Justin Aceves. Dukes has rushed for 1,558 yards while Aceves leads an offense that averages an impressive 34.5 ppg.

Defensively, the Big Reds are led by seniors Ben Fick and Blaine LeClair. Fick leads the Big Reds with 120 tackles. Milan also boast two outstanding LB's in juniors Robert Kanitz and Austin Hoover Kanitz may be the best all around player in the Huron League. The Big Red defense give-up a meager 10.8 ppg.

This should be a great game and will most certainly be the game that I attend. It should be fun to watch the young Jesse Hoskins match wits with the veteran Al Romano who has won everywhere he has coached. Hurricane Sandy the frankenstorm may have something to say about this game. Bad weather would favor the rugged Big Reds while nice weather would be the Indians. With the nicknames of these two teams let's call this the Politically Incorrect Bowl. Pick: Milan 31 Tecumseh 28

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

District Championship for any of our Huron League teams?

Airport decided not to go away quietly.

SMCC looks to be starting their two or three year run a little early.

Nice win by Grosse Ile, Chandler Park was loaded.

Will Van Washenova be given the job at Airport?

All is fair in love, war and football

My contact at the SMCC game was seated by 6:15 pm. That is kinda early.

Unimpressed with the small crowd at Grosse Ile Friday.

Levi Eddings is a beast!

The Chandler Park coach reminded me of a whiny baby.

It appears that Milan showed some playoff jitters on Friday. Don't expect that again.

Unlike many on the GI side, I was impressed with UM recruit Csonte' York

What game should I go to this week?

Harper Woods Chandler Park @ Grosse Ile

Chandler Park (6-2) is coming off of a 44-6 loss to Warren De La Salle while Grosse Ile (8-1) beat Detroit Henry Ford Creative Studies 41-0. These two teams have never met in football.

This is only the fifth season of football for the Eagles of Chandler Park but this is the fourth consecutive year of qulifying for the playoffs.

Chandler Park is led by 6'3" 185 lb three star University of Michigan recruit Csonte' York. York has the ability to dominate a game from his WR position or on special teams. Defensively the Eagles are led by 6'3" 220lb DE Andre Turner who has committed to Western Michigan.

Chandler Park is a program that will continue to get better over the years as many of the eastside Police Athletic League players continue to filter into the school in Harper Woods.

Grosse Ile will continue to run the ball from the spread while being opportunistic with the pass. Defensively the Red Devils must tackle well and try to limit the big plays of the Eagles.

This is a scray game for Coach John Bodner. His Red Devils don't boast any Division 1 talent and are a relatively small team but look for the home team to send a message that you must put eleven players on the field at one time. Pick: Grosse Ile 28 Chandler Park 19

Airport @ Milan.

Airport (6-3) is coming off of a big win over Tecumseh 11-10. Milan beat Ypsi Lincoln 36-14 to wrap up an undefeated regular season. Milan defeated Airport 41-0 in week 8.

Many were surprised that Airport beat Tecumseh and qualified for the playoffs after looking mediocre most of the season. Milan hopes to continue their dream season. Pick: Milan 31 Airport 20

Monday, October 22, 2012

Warren Michigan Collegiate @ SMCC

Michigan Collegiate (6-3) is coming off of a 24-0 loss at the hands of Divine Child while SMCC (7-2) closed out the year with a 49-6 victory over Ypsilanti. This will be the first time these two teams have met in football.

The Cougars are just one of a handful of teams in the state of Michigan that can boast an all time winning percentage better than SMCC. Collegiate started their program in 2008 and have never had a losing season. The Cougars are no strangers to the playoffs as this is their 4th consecutive trip to the state playoffs. Last season Collegiate finished 11-1 overall and the previous season the Cougars made it to the state semi-finals while finishing 11-2.

The Cougars boast a roster of 38 players of which 19 are seniors and most have been a part of the recent playoff success. Offensively, Collegiate is led by sophomore QB Rudy Hayes and junior RB Larry Bell. Defensively, the Cougars are led by sophomore LB's Jamell Smith and Kenneth Butler.

SMCC will counter with their powerful running game out of the straight T led by senior signal caller Michael Wilson. A host of Falcons will carry the ball with the hothand getting most of the carries. Look for sophomore Josh Czarniowski to have an impact and possibly freshman Justin Carrabino. Defensively, the Falcons will be led senior LB and captain Levi Eddings.

Kick off is set for 7:00 pm Friday night. Both teams may be a year away from playing some of their best football but this should be a good matchup. Collegiate has more playoff experience but the Falcons have played a little better schedule. The Cougars speed will pose some problems for the Falcons while SMCC's discipline and deception should be an advantage. Pick: SMCC 32 Warren Collegiate 20

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to seven of our Huron League teams after week 9 victories.

Airport really surprised me.

Did Flat Rock play that well or was Willow Run that bad.

Nice win for Riverview over the Monsterous Detroit Consortium.

Milan and SMCC just keep rolling.

I'm assuming GI avoided any injuries against HFCS

Nice to see Huron end the season with a win.

Is the league down this year? I don't think so.

Obviously I'm just guessing here but here are some playoff thoughts:

It looks like Airport will travel to Milan for the 1st round of the playoffs

I don't think Grosse Ile is going to get a home playoff game. That doesn't seem fair.

Look for SMCC to host Warren Collegiate and make a solid playoff run in Division 6.

Ypsi Lincoln/Milan

Milan(8-0) defeated Airport last week 41-0 while Ypsi Lincoln (5-3) defeated Ypsi High 26-14. These two teams last met in 2006 when the Big Reds beat the Railsplitters 54-12.

Milan is trying to complete an undefeated regular season for the first time since 1997. Lincoln is hoping to qualify for the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Pick: Milan 28 Lincoln 21

Grosse Ile/Detroit HFCS

Grosse Ile (8-1) is coming off of a convincing win over Riverview 40-13. Henry Ford Creative Studies (0-6) is coming off of a 48-6 loss against Harper Woods.

This game will get ugly. The Mustangs are a first year program while Grosse Ile is hoping for another deep playoff run. Pick: Grosse Ile 55 HFCS 0

SMCC/Ypsilanti

SMCC (6-2) is coming off of a win over Jefferson 29-24 while Ypsilanti (1-7) is recovering from a 26-14 loss to Ypsi Lincoln. These teams haven't played in the last 60 years.

SMCC could wrap up a playoff home game with a victory. Pick: SMCC 34 Ypsi 12

Airport/Tecumseh

Airport (5-3) was shut out at Milan last week 41-0. Tecumseh (7-1) beat Adrian 29-26. The Jets won last season's game 35-14.

Airport needs this win to get into the playoffs while Tecumseh is most likely playing for a home game. Pick: Tecumseh 34 Airport 20

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Willow Run/Flat Rock

Flat Rock (3-5) is coming off of a 19-14 victory over Huron last week while Willow Run (2-6) is coming off of a blowout loss against Detroit Consortium.

This is a no brainer. Pick: Flat Rock 35 Willow Run 10

Jefferson/Bedford

Jefferson (1-7) is coming off a hard fought loss to SMCC 29-24. Bedford (5-3) is a win away from the playoffs after defeating Monroe last week 27-13. Jefferson upset Bedford last season 7-6.

I can't imagine this game will be close but then again I said that last season. Pick: Bedford 31 Jefferson 14

Riverview/Detroit Consortium

Riverview (2-6) fell to cross river rival Grosse Ile last week 40-13. Consortium (6-2) beat Willow Run 49-3. This is the first time these two teams have met on the gridiron.

Tough to tell who will win this game based on the competition. One of my former students Marcus Hearn is a monster (6'6" 325lb) on the Cougar offensive line. Pick: Consortium 26 Riverview 21

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Crestwood/Huron

Crestwood enters this game at 2-6. This Chargers were beaten last week by Edsel Ford 20-6. Huron (2-6) lost to arch rival Flat Rock last week 19-14. The Chiefs won last season's game 28-6.

This should be a competitive game both teams have struggled this season and have close losses to common opponent Riverview. Pick: Huron 27 Crestwood 21

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to Milan on their league championship.

Grosse Ile's JV could beat their next opponent.

I won't be at a game next week. I have my annual Men's Wild Game Dinner at the Carleton VFW.

I like rivalry week but would like to see it in week 4 or 5.

Mitroka or Aceves?

Airport needs to win in week 9 to make the playoffs for the 14th consecutive season.

Jesse Hoskins is most certainly the Huron League Coach of the Year.

Start submitting your thoughts on all league teams including Players of the Year.

Flat Rock's Mike Blosser did everything but sell popcorn against Huron. He probably would have if it would have been a home game for the Rams.

Biggest underachieving team?

Milan @ Airport

Both teams are coming off of wins. Milan improved to 7-0 on the season with a win over Riverview while Airport (5-2) defeated Jefferson. Airport won last season 48-14.

Milan continued their roll toward a #1 seed in the playoff district last week.

Airport continues to eye a playoff birth but will most likely need a big win over one of two very good opponents to qualify.

Airport has been living on the edge while Milan continues to play very well. Pick: Milan 35 Airport 20

Jefferson @ SMCC

SMCC (5-2) is coming off of a win over Flat Rock while Jefferson (1-6) is coming off of a heartbreaking 35-28 loss to Airport. Jefferson won last season's game 15-13.

The Falcons keep getting better and better and may be able to make a small playoff run.

Jefferson has been inconsistent all season but expect the Bears best effort of the year against their heated rival.

This is a game where you can toss out the records. Both teams and coaches know each others tendencies too well. Pick: SMCC 22 Jefferson 20

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Riverview @ Grosse Ile

The teams enter this rivarly on opposite ends of the league spectrum. Grosse Ile improved to 6-1 on the season with a victory over Huron while Riverview fell to 2-5 with a loss to Milan. Riverview won last season's game 31-21.

Grosse Ile has a stout defense and an offense that runs the ball well and is opportunistic with the pass.

Riverview has a solid ground game offensively but continues to struggle on defense.

Grosse Ile appears to be poised for a solid playoff run while Riverview is hoping to build confidence for next year. Pick: Grosse Ile 34 Riverview 20

Flat Rock @ Huron

Both teams are coming off of losses to top teams in the league. The Rams (2-5) lost at SMCC 44-7 while the Chiefs (2-5) lost at home to Grosse Ile 36-6. Huron won last year's game at Flat Rock 21-14.

Flat Rock has showed an inability to stop the run the last two weeks while the offense has once again sputtered.

Huron can move the ball on most teams but turnovers have hurt the Chiefs most of the season.

This is a fun rivalry game and one that I look forward to most years. You can always expect a big crowd and a close game. This one should be no different. Pick:Flat Rock 21 Huron 20

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Clearly Milan and Grosse Ile are the two best teams in the league.

I think one of our league teams will make a deep playoff run.

Who is the best QB in the league?

Obviously some of the teams in the league are starting to focus on the winter sports season.

I don't think Airport will make the playoffs this season.

Any thoughts on offensive and defensive players of the year?

I always enjoy rivalry week around the league.

I hate cold rain at football games.

Shouldn't every non-baseball playing football player run track?

Best coach in the league these days?

I wish more teams in our league would run the spread.

I really enjoyed watching the best QB in the B1G thrash Nebraska last night.

Jefferson @ Airport

Airport (4-2) is coming off of a 14-13 victory over Huron while Jefferson (1-5) fell to Grosse Ile 41-16. Airport won last year's match up 21-0.

Airport still has a shot at the playoffs but the Jets must win two of their last three games to get in.

Jefferson is just trying to salvage the season at this point and will certainly be energized the next two weeks while playing their biggest rivals.

Tough to tell what will happen here but the safe bet would be to go with the team that has the better record. Pick: Airport 28 Jefferson 13.

Riverview @ Milan

Riverview (2-4) gave up 61 points in a loss to SMCC last week while Milan (6-0) continued it's undefeated season by pummeling Flat Rock 42-10. The Pirates won last year 35-14.

Once again last week Riverview showed that they are capable of scoring but the Pirates are giving up a whopping 40 ppg.

Milan boast the best offense in the league and the best defense. That usually is not a good combination for opponents.

This game should be over early Both teams are headed in opposite directions. Pick: Milan 31 Riverview 14

Flat Rock @ SMCC

Flat Rock (2-4) is coming off of a homecoming loss to Milan while SMCC (4-2) is coming off of a win over Riverview. SMCC won last year's game 19-0.

Flat Rock looked good for a half last week until Milan's size and speed took over the game. Flat Rock's offense will be the key, the defense should keep them in the game.

SMCC dropped a big offensive number against Riverview last week. Homecoming festivities should have the Falcons motivated.

SMCC needs two more wins for the playoffs while Flat Rock is just trying to improve on last season's record and give the program something to build on. Pick: SMCC 22 Flat Rock 10

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Grosse Ile @ Huron

Grosse Ile (5-1) is coming off of a 41-16 win over Jefferson while Huron (2-4) suffered a one point loss to Airport 14-13. The Red Devils beat the Chiefs last year 49-27.

Grosse Ile continues to roll towards the post season. The offense continues to click while the defense gets better each week.

Huron suffered it's second one point loss of the season last week. The Chiefs should be fired up for homecoming this week.

Grosse Ile is still hoping to get a share of the league title but must win out and then hope for a little help. Huron is hoping to salvage their season with a homecoming win. Pick: Grosse Ile 27 Huron 21

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

How far will Milan go in the playoffs?

Will Grosse make another playoff run?

What happens when SMCC starts playing D VI opponents?

Does Airport have a shot at the playoffs still?

Can Flat Rock rebound from their homecoming loss to Milan?

Can Huron rebound from another one point loss?

Will the Riverview AD be looking for a new coach? Is that even possible?

Is this the end for the legend at Jefferson?

It has been an interesting season around the league but really no upsets any week. The favorite seems to win most every game.

This week will be easy to pick with no upsets scheduled.

I golfed in two outings over the weekend. I just may be the worst golfer of all time.
