Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to SMCC and Huron on their victories.

Another interception for SMCC's Windham?

That was quite a hit by Huron's junior DB Gage Brownell late in the fourth quarter.

I'm pretty sure 50-15 is a blowout.

Are you kidding me Devin Collins?

I am taking SMCC against anyone in Division 6.

Nice crowd at Huron.

Lumen Christi and SMCC have the exact same enrollment.

Is Huron actually one win away from the state semi-finals?

I hope SMCC's John Lako is available on Friday.

I think Trenton would fit nicely in the Huron League.

Playoffs are a regular thing for SMCC, it could be for Huron too!

Why no "Big City" newspaper publicity for the Huron League teams?

I'm a cool 5-0 in playoff picks so far.

Should we expect Lumen Christi and Thurston fans to visit the blog this week?

Will SMCC play any one outside of Division 6?

JLC will be a tough match. Stout across the front going about 240 and a D1 RB in Willis. MSU for you Chris. I don't see SMCC coming out of there with a win. I think it will be close but I think there is more diversity in the JLC offense. 3-6-7 are real play makers. good luck Falcons!

Agree with Chris, 50-15 is a blow out. Almost scoring in the 2nd half does not mean you are in the game.

I'm already going to welcome Lumen Christi and Thurston fans. Welcome to the Huron League Blog guys!

It ended up being a blowout, yes. But Clinton had an opportunity to make it 36-22. Now obviously almosts don't mean anything, so SMCCs defense turned it into a blowout at that point.

stosento said...

It will be a tough match-up, but if SMCC stopped Clintons offense, they have a shot at stopping JLCs. I think the more important thing to look at is the defenses. JLC has been giving up quite a bit of points every game this year. That's what's giving SMCC the edge for me.

I just hope that we'll be able to tell the two teams apart! They have just about the same uniforms!

It's nice to see Huron still alive and going strong. Looking at Thurstons record, they had a rough start but pulled it together. I know DC is a decent squad so Huron will have to bring their A game. If Huron makes it past Thurston, I think they could go all the way to the end.

I'd take Woodhaven into the league over Trenton. It'd be a nice addition. Adding a competitive team into the league. You'd have 6 top notch teams to chose from (SMCC, GI, VIEW, HURON, AIRPORT, WOOODHAVEN). Trenton needs to stay Downriver. They would wind up like Flat Rock in my opinion. They're decent but they have 4 bottom feeder teams in the DRL: Taylor Truman, Taylor Kennedy, Lincoln Park, and Melvindale. I think if we took and put Flat Rock into the DRL and took a good DRL team, it'd pan out both leagues and could benefit Flat Rock (my opinion)

It'd be great to see Huron make regular appearances into the playoffs. It'd help boast their program further and could bring out more players and draw more attention to the school.

Welcome Christi and Thurston fans. We gladly listen to excuses and complaining, as it's all been said and hears before! LOL

Lumen will have green jersey, cc will have white.

Would Huron be in the playoffs without Milan QB Matt Hartwick? Wonder where those two teams would be right now if He would have stayed at Milan?

Anonymous said...

KC woodhaven has 1500 kids Trenton 900....are you crazy? That would not be good for the league.

Anonymous said...

While it would be a great story to see Huron go all the way KC, they would be a BIG underdog vs Orchard Lake St Mary in the semis. EM

Anonymous said...

Hartwick lives in the Huron district. Moved nearly two years ago. Get over it.

Anonymous said...

I am extremely happy that Huron is still playing but if they have to play Orchard LAKE ST. MARY'S they will get beat twice as bad as Smcc game. Orchard Lake should have beaten Brother Rice . Game would be very ugly.

Anonymous said...

Milan should of made playoffs and could been 7-2 only losing to Smcc and Dcd. Matt is 1-1 vs Milan.

Anonymous said...

hey go falcons thats why you playing game on friday nobody else matters. you might lose you might Win. I just know youll give it your best and you wont be out coached or played.

Anonymous said...

Transfers happen people. School of choice or not. Some come and some go. Yes Huron benefited from Hartwick transferring but, Milan got a transfer at QB as well. Play with who you have, period. If I remember correctly CC lost their 2 good players to transfer.. I don't see them complaining or making excuses. You play with who you got.

Anonymous said...

... actually CC lost 3 of their best players to transfer. Whited transferred prior to last year. No Howey, no Robinson, Lako didn't play against Clinton.. just have to find a way.

Anonymous said...

Huron is focused on one team and one game, Redford Thurston in the Regional.

Anonymous said...

Why would that be bad for tbe league? What does having 1500 kids in enrollment have to do with anything? Scared of a big school? Scared of that "giant talent pool"? I'm just saying, I'd rather a skilled team come into the league to make the battle a bit more interesting.

Milan shoulda coulda woulda.
Their 4 loses came to all 4 teams that made the layoffs and were in the top of the league. Change that next year.

JLC Puts in their subs in a lot sooner than SMCC does. Therefore scores are closer. Planning more for their future. SMCC plays for running clock then subs.

I don't know about losing best players. Those boys were pretty good, but not significant enough to make that big of a difference.

I'm sure we will hear that all week though. All kinds of our very best kids out, they all weigh less than 180lbs. yeah yeah whatever.

This league is not that great folks, that's why theres no coverage. SMCC or Huron hasn't played anybody that great yet.

Trenton, Grass Lake and Clinton are mediocre programs at best.
Riverview was probly the best team either of them have played.

Now, if these boys can beat the likes of JLC, Orchard Lake, Muskegon, Ithaca, now were talking. These are some of the very best programs in our state.

Huron has a much tougher road than SMCC, I will be highly impressed if Huron can get to Ford Field in their division.

SMCC has JLC, and Ithaca. We'll see what happens. Still holding out everybody, seen a lot of high school football, takes a lot to impress.

Anonymous said...

Thurston v huron will be a good one as will jlc v smcc.

I predict Huron wins 28-21 and CC wins 31-26

8:15 is a tough cookie. His squad must not be in the playoffs. SMCC will bring the pain vs Lumen . Learning from the LCC loss. Keep posting your negative version of your truth. Makes u look like a hater. Which I'm sure u most likely r.

Someone sounds bitter?

Stating some facts that have no basis behind them whatsoever. Good luck to your team next year. Sorry they lost already.

How many times do we have to say it? Matt Hartwicks family moved in to Huron School District. he is not a school of choice kid, he lives here!

Anonymous said...

Trenton should be in the Huron league. I'd replace Milan with them and Airport with AP if they'd come. Nothing against those two schools, they are usually pretty good in most of their sports and are properly positioned in the league as far as parity. But they're just so fricken' far to get too. In certain sports kids have to leave school 1/2 - 1 hr early to get there on time, and they to us. Good teams, good programs, just not good geographic fit.

Could make the same case for Jeff & SMCC, but they are at least straight hwy for the most part.

Anonymous said...

Huron's back up would start for most teams....has a cannon

Anonymous said...

You forgot a school in your top 6. Milan belongs in there too. Woodhaven is a very large school. Do they really belong in the Huron League?

Anonymous said...

Riverview? Tough? C'mon now. CC had to go to Lansing Catholic to finally play someone tough. I think that JLC will give them everything though. I don't know anything about this Thurston team, but I hope Huron gives them a game. Trenton was a CC scrimmage game, and they were terrible. I'd rather see Ida in the HL. Or have Carlson come back.

"JLC Puts in their subs in a lot sooner than SMCC does. Therefore scores are closer. Planning more for their future. SMCC plays for running clock then subs."

Untrue.
9/6 JLC 34-Charlotte 14. Starting QB Greca throws for TD in 4th quarter.
9/12 JLC 34- Battle creek 14. Willis (heard of him?) scores in every quarter
9/19 JLC 48-Jackson NW 10. Greca TD pass in 3rd qu after score was already 32-3
9/27 JLC 49-Marshall 21. Willis rushed for his 1,000 yd this game. He and Greca still in until running clock.
10/11 JLC 61-Parma west 28. Willis still scores in third quarter to go up 47-21.
10/18 JLC 46- Pennfield 12. Willis scores in the third to go up 35-6.

I'm not saying that the starters should have come out sooner for JLC but to say that CC leaves them in longer than JLC is a fabrication. There are a few more games that also dispel your claims but my fingers are cramping up from all the typing...
You should disable the internet before making up such things.

Part 1

"JLC Puts in their subs in a lot sooner than SMCC does. Therefore scores are closer. Planning more for their future. SMCC plays for running clock then subs."

While I haven't seen them play, they generally don't have to use their MSU commit RB in the second half, so that's probably true. I'm not sure what you mean by planning more for their future. If you're talking about playoffs, which I'm assuming you are, then it seems like a flawed strategy. If you're never playing your starters in the second half, they will likely not be prepared for a tough game down the stretch. Conditioning is HUGE come playoff time, and only playing your starters for a half raises questions about their conditioning in a close game. So I don't know. And yeah, scores can be closer in that situation, but they're giving up consistently 14+ points in their games, and not to good teams, either. While some of this can be put on the back-ups, not all of it.

"I don't know about losing best players. Those boys were pretty good, but not significant enough to make that big of a difference."

Probably not best players, but those guys would have made a strong impact. It speaks volumes when those kids can transfer to a D1 school and start right away. That shows power and strength that SMCC definitely could have used. And one of them made the league first team offense. So yeah, they would have made this team stronger.

"I'm sure we will hear that all week though. All kinds of our very best kids out, they all weigh less than 180lbs. yeah yeah whatever."

I agree with you here. Injuries, size of players, yada yada yada. You play with what you got and injuries are a part of the game. Depth is a huge part of the strength of a team, and SMCC showed that they do have depth with the losses of some good players. It does prove that there's depth for the team, which is very promising and necessary late into a season.

"This league is not that great folks, that's why theres no coverage. SMCC or Huron hasn't played anybody that great yet"

Alright, I used to think this was the case in the middle of the season, but you're dead wrong. My analysis of the league this year is in 4 tiers:

Top tier: SMCC, Huron - teams that are proving themselves in the playoffs, only losses to very good teams that are doing well in playoffs.
Second tier: Riverview, Grosse Ile - strong league performances, decent squads, rough first round matchups (both lost to teams in the first round that have a good shot at Regional titles).
Third tier: Milan, Airport - not terrible, but nothing special. They were competitive at times, not playoff contenders.
Last tier: Jefferson, Flat Rock - not the best seasons.

While I won't say that Riverview or Grosse Ile are "great", I would say they are solid. Not the best, but decent teams. As far as their non-conferences, I agree with you that Huron played a couple of bad teams. No contesting there. As far as SMCC, heavily disagree with you, more on that in next section.

Part 2

"Trenton, Grass Lake and Clinton are mediocre programs at best.
Riverview was probly the best team either of them have played"

SMCC played Tecumseh, another class B school that's somewhere in between the second and third tier above. While not great, any team that has a middling record that's a class B school is a solid schedule for SMCC. And finally, LCC. How can you say SMCC hasn't played anyone great this year? LCC is a very solid team this year, and have a very good shot at making the finals in D5. Now onto post-season matchups:

Huron
1) Riverview - see above...I think View was a good team this year.
2) Trenton - This team belongs in the same tier as Riverview, maybe a bit higher.
Huron has been impressive thus far in the playoffs, and has a good shot against Thurston for a Regional Title.

SMCC
1) Grass Lake - weak team, but SMCC destroyed them convincingly.
2) Clinton - widely considered a great team in D6. While I do think they were overrated, SMCC beat a team ranked #3 (or #4, depends where you look) by 35 points. Clinton was good with a few speedsters, but look worse just because SMCC handled them.
I agree that JLC is a great team, but to say Clinton wasn't that great is wrong.

To say Riverview was the best team either of them have played is laughable.

"Now, if these boys can beat the likes of JLC, Orchard Lake, Muskegon, Ithaca, now were talking. These are some of the very best programs in our state."

Yeah, and while they're at it, why not play against Brother Rice, Cass Tech, Clarkston, or DeWitt? I don't think that you have to beat some of the strongest year-in year-out programs in the state to prove your team is good. While I agree a win against one of these teams solidifies that state, it's just not that simple. For example, I think SMCC already has that prestige, mainly because of the closeness of the game with LCC. I could see how you think Huron still has to prove themselves, though. But, Huron has done what they've had to do to keep their season alive, which is all you can really ask of them with the playoff games given to them.

Part 3

"Huron has a much tougher road than SMCC, I will be highly impressed if Huron can get to Ford Field in their division."

SMCC

They started with Grass Lake. Weak team, they destroyed them, I'll give you that one. From there on out, it is a GAUNTLET to reach Ford Field for the Falcons. In D6, they are easily in the toughest Region, and that's not even a question. Most rankings at the beginning of the playoffs had JLC, SMCC, Clinton as 2, 3, 4, or somewhere close to that configuration. Furthermore, Manchester (9) was in their district as well. Teams ranked 7 (Constantine), 10 (GR NorthPointe), 11 (Ravenna), and 12(Watervliet) are all on their side of the bracket. While rankings don't mean all too much, I believe that the top 5 are generally accurate with the rest somewhat accurate.

To have 3 Top 10 teams in 1 district is crazy, and to have 3 of the top 4 D6 programs in the state in the same region is torturous. The semi match would be a nice break, but still against a pre-playoff #10 or #12 that pulled off some upsets along the way.

The other side features Ithaca(1), and then a couple of good northern teams (5, 6), and 8, 9. While it's not an easy trip for teams on the other side, SMCCs district/region/semifinal will/has been the most difficult path in D6.

SMCC Road to FF = UR, #4, #2, #10/#12.

The only tougher road in the playoffs in D6 would have been Clinton, since they had a decent #9 Manchester squad in the first round that has already seen them.

Huron

Through Regionals, the trip for Huron has been relatively generous. Their road, according to most ranking sites, has been the easiest in D3. Riverview, Trenton, and Thurston don't even crack the top 14 teams. While they are solid teams, I like SMCC's chances better in Huron's region than Huron in SMCC's. When it comes to semis, there's no arguing Huron has a harder matchup. They either get a OLSM team that's always solid, or a hot Mason squad that upset #2 DeWitt for a District title and then another upset against #4 OLSM. I wouldn't want to be Huron in either of these situations.

Huron Road to FF = UR, UR, UR, #4

We will see what happens, but if you're not impressed with SMCC or Huron thus far, your expectations are real high.

If other SMCC fans made respectable comments like you do, I don't think they would get so much crap. Unfortunately many come across much more arrogant than you.

Looks like you have a lot of time on your hands up there in Ann Arbor. LOL.

Senior year with only 12 credits per semester :). I haven't been on this blog the past 3 years, those were the years filled with the 16, 17, 18 credit semesters.

I appreciate the sentiment! I do have some extra time this year...only 12 credits per semester to finish out senior year. Compare that to the last 3 years where I was having around 16 to 17 credit semesters on average. Rough times. Haven't been on the blog the past 3 years for that reason.

Anonymous said...

I apologize for this ahead of time, but, what did Collins do against SMCC?

Anonymous said...

SMCC fans make many respectable comments. Most just praising their own team without concerning anyone else. The only time they do not is when EVERYONE ELSE spouts all kinds of reasons why their win is not deserved. If you can't take it, don't dish it out! All it sounds like is sour grapes.
