Grass Lake @ SMCC

SMCC (8-1) is coming off of a loss to undefeated Lansing Catholic 27-22 while Grass Lake defeated Jonesville 53-27. The teams have met twice in the playoffs over the last 5 years with SMCC winning both games.

SMCC continues to be powered by a strong running game and a solid defense. The Falcons were dinged up a little bit last week, but have a "next man up" attitude. Seniors John Lako and Bryce Windham will lead the Falcon offense. TE Riley Woolford and OL Kyle Bausman are blocking standouts for SMCC.

Defensively SMCC had only given up 21 points during the Huron League campaign, but gave that many up in the first half last week. The defense will get better this week led by Darius Marks and Justin LaPlante.

This is not a vintage Grass Lake team. The program had won 81 games in the previous nine seasons, but they did managed to qualify for the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season. Junior QB Kyle Farley and senior RB Justin Wright lead the Warriors spread offense that averages over 30 ppg.

On defense the Warriors are led by junior LB Todd Coppernoll and senior LB Cody Brown along with junior DL Cody Dakin.

This should be a warm up for the Falcons, but Grass Lake is a solid program that is well coached by veteran Warrior Randy Cole. Prediction: SMCC 33 Grass Lake 7

Riverview @ Huron

Huron (8-1) is coming off of  a 34-8 victory over Annapolis while Riverview (6-3) crushed Summit Academy 41-0. Huron won the earlier contest this year 24-20 in week five.

Offensively Riverview will rely on seniors Drew Kroll, Nolan Glime and Adam Borgert. Junior RB Eric Gant needs to have a big game. Riverview ran the ball early on in the week five match up only to see it disappear in the second half. The Riverview defense is led by senior Steve Pinkava and Junior LB Tyler Chase.

The  Huron offense is powered by a physical offensive line that includes seniors Jon Krug, Dustin Vukas and TE Jamison Cobb. Junior QB Matt Hartwick leads the Chief ground game. Defensively Huron is led by seniors Chase McKay, Justin Carey and Logan Ritchie.

Huron has won six straight games while Riverview has lost three of five after winning the first four games of the season. This game is going to be decided by QB play and how the coaching staffs adjust to each other based on the week five result. Prediction: Huron 24 Riverview 20

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Grosse Ile @ Chelsea

Grosse Ile (7-2) is coming off of a 63-0 victory over Hazel Park while Chelsea beat Haslett 21-6. These two teams have never met in football. Both teams failed to qualify for the playoffs last season. That broke a streak of 15 straight trips for the Bulldogs.

Grosse Ile finished 3rd in the Huron League after finishing 5-4 last season. The Red Devils are led by Senior QB Andrew Mitroka. Sophomore Andrew Vollmerhausen is a rugged RB who gives GI a solid ground attack. Sophomore receiver Justin Moores gives Mitroka a big target on the outside. The offensive line is anchored by senior Max Gilliam.

On defense, senior LB Phil Camilleri is the leading tackler while DL Dominic Trombley is having a big sophomore year. Senior DB Derek Judd is avergaing 6 tackles per game to go along with 4 INT's on the season.

Chelsea is averaging 33 ppg against what is mostly a Class A schedule. Junior QB Justice Staton leads the offense. He has two reliable receivers in Juniors Noah Van Reemesma and Bailey Edwards. The Bulldogs also boast a solid RB in senior Ty Nelson.

Chelsea doesn't have a great defense , but they have been solid most of the season in the high scoring SEC. The Bulldogs give up 21 ppg. Senior LB Mason Bailey leads the Bulldog defense.

I'm not sure how this game will go. Grosse Ile is playing really well right now, but were handled by the two best teams on their schedule. Chelsea is used to playing big schools and playing in Division 4 may give them a huge advantage. The Red Devils have talent, but I'm going to go with the team with more depth and a tougher schedule. Prediction: Chelsea 34 Grosse Ile 20

Huron League Playoff Pairings

Division 3
Region 4 District 2
Riverview @ Huron
Romulus @ Trenton

Outlook: This could be anyone's district. Huron is the #1 seed, but Trenton might be considered the favorite. Romulus ended the season with a bad loss to Crestwood. Riverview is eager to get another shot at Huron.

Division 4
Region 4 District 1
Grosse Ile @ Chelsea
Old Redford Academy @ Dearborn Heights Robichaud

Outlook: This district is wide open. Robichaud is the #1 seed and has two victories over playoff teams. Chelsea plays the toughest schedule, but Grosse Ile should give them problems.

Division 6
Region 4 District 2
Grass Lake @ SMCC
Manchester @ Clinton

Outlook: SMCC and Clinton appear to be the class of the district. SMCC received a favorable 1st round opponent., while Clinton must beat Manchester who they beat 41-19 in week 1.

Grosse Ile 55 Hazel park 28
Flat Rock 18 Stockbridge 8
Huron 41 Annapolis 8
Country Day 40 Milan 0
Lansing Catholic Central 48 SMCC 18

Tecumseh @ Airport

Airport (3-5) is coming off of a 45-27 loss to Milan while Tecumseh (5-3) defeated Adrian 31-12. The Indians won last years game 42-21 and leads the all time series 23-15 with one tie.

The Jets have lost four straight after starting the season 3-1. The running game has been effective all season, but the defense is giving up nearly 30 ppg.

Tecumseh gives up a lot of points, but is well coached. The Indians have two quality wins and gave Huron League Champion SMCC a game for the better part of three quarters.

Tecumseh needs a win to guarantee a trip to the playoffs while Airport could end the season on a positive note and help some league teams along the way with a victory. Prediction: Tecumseh 34 Airport 28

Country Day @ Milan

Milan (4-4) defeated Airport 45-27 while DCDS (4-4) fell to Muskegon CC 30-0. These two teams have met twice over the years with each team winning one game.

Milan has won two straight games after dropping three straight. The running game has picked up while the defense has done just enough.

This is not a vintage DCDS team, but the Yellow Jackets have played a tough schedule. Although they have only one quality win, there are some players capable of making big plays.

Both teams need a win this game to give them a shot at the playoffs. A DCDS win should give them enough points to get in at 5-4. Milan may need some help with a win to get into the playoffs, but the opportunity is there. Prediction: DCDS 27 Milan 21

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

SMCC @ Lansing Catholic Central

SMCC (8-0) is coming off of a 47-7 victory over Jefferson while LCC (8-0) beat Detroit Community 48-6. The Falcons won last years game 49-20.

SMCC steamrolled through the Huron League schedule this year. This week 9 match up may provide the toughest test of the year thus far. The Falcon defense will be challenged by a team that throws the ball a lot, but is able to run the ball as well.

The Cougars are led by 6-7, 235 lb  QB Tony Poljan. The junior has thrown for over 1700 yards and rushed for nearly 700 yards while accounting for 33 TD's. In LCC's closest game of the year, a 34-20 victory over Ionia he threw for 282 yards and 3 TD's while rushing for another 238 and a TD.

The Cougars may remind many Falcon faithful of the teams the they faced at Ford Field back in 2009 and 2010. This team is a lot like Monatgue and Ithaca, they all had Division I QB prospects although Poljan is most likely to play DI basketball. Prediction: SMCC 31 LCC 27

Stockbridge @ Flat Rock

Flat Rock (0-8) lost to Huron last week 46-6 while Stockbridge (5-3) defeated Durand 61-19. Stockbridge won last seasons game 60-16.

The Panthers are a scoring machine that is averaging 45 ppg. They are also giving up 43 ppg. Stockbridge needs this victory to qualify for the playoffs.

Flat Rock has lost 17 straight games and this will be the last game for Flat Rock graduate and head coach Tom Oestrike before he leaves to take the athletic director job at Dundee.

I don't think the Rams will be able to stop the Panthers high powered offense, but if the Rams can keep their turnovers and penalties to a minimum then they should put up some points. Call me crazy, but I think Flat Rock can win this game. Prediction: Flat Rock 48 Stockbridge 47

Tuesday, October 21, 2014

Huron @ Annapolis

Huron (7-1) beat Flat Rock last week 48-6 while Annapolis (3-5) fell to Livonia Clarenceville 41-20. The Chiefs won last years game 42-6.Huron holds an all time edge in the series of 18-5.

Huron is in the middle of their best football season ever. They broke a school record for wins last week. This should be a chance for Huron to get everyone playing time before the playoffs start.

The Cougars seemed to have won the games they should have on the schedule and lost the ones they should have as well. Don't look for things to change.

Huron looks like they may have out grown this long non-league rivalry. Prediction: Huron 45 Annapolis 6

Detroit UPSM @ Jefferson

Jefferson (1-7) is coming off of a 47-7 loss to SMCC while University Prep Science and Math (2-6) lost to Lutheran Northwest 37-18. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams.

Jefferson will get the opportunity to end the season on a positive note. Look for the pass happy Bears to run the ball nearly every play against the Cobra defense.

UPSM is in just their third year as a football program. The Cobras started the season 2-1, but have lost five straight games.

Sometimes you have to find a winnable game in the non-league schedule. Everyone should get playing time in this game. Prediction: Jefferson 42 UPSM 6

Monday, October 20, 2014

Riverview @ Summit Academy

Riverview (5-3) lost to Grosse Ile 28-14 while Summit Academy (1-7) lost to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 53-6. The Pirates won last seasons game 63-0.

Riverview has lost three of their last four games, but should get better this week against the Dragons. The Pirates will look to stay healthy this week and get everyone playing time.

It has been a long season over at Summit. Points have been hard to come by this year and the Dragon defense is giving up nearly 40 ppg.

The best thing about this game is the Pirates won't get lost driving right down Sibley Rd. Prediction: Riverview 55 Summit 6

Hazel Park @ Grosse Ile

Grosse Ile (6-2) is coming off of a 28-14 victory over rival Riverview while Hazel Park (0-8) lost last week to Ferndale 56-14. Grosse Ile won last years game 26-22.

Hazel Park plays in OAA Blue Division and is currently in the midst of a 21 game losing streak. The Vikings have only scored 20 points on the season and have been shutout 6 times.

Grosse Ile is playing their best football right now. The offensive and defensive lines have been dominant lately and should use this as a tune up game for the playoffs.

This game will be over early. The biggest question probably is, has anyone on the Hazel Park team ever been to Grosse Ile? Prediction: Grosse Ile 34 Hazel Park 6

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Congrats to SMCC for winning the Huron League title. (I made the pick back in August)

Congrats to Huron for breaking the school record in wins. (I didn't make that pick)

Grosse Ile gets a big win over Riverview and finishes third. (I did pick GI 3rd in August)

Milan still has a shot at the post season. (My Milan season picks never turn out)

Apparently Jefferson Bear Justin Kull broke the school record for passing yards. Congrats! (I would have thought he broke that back in week three or four)

Turnovers hurt the Rams again.

With that loss, Riverview might not like the first round playoff match up that they get.

I'm really surprised that Airport gave up 45 points on Friday.

Who is the best RB in the league? Lot's of good underclassmen!

Some teams don't block and tackle very well. Do they still teach that?

I would like to see a Grosse Ile/Robichaud match up in week one of the playoffs.

I would love the Texas football District and playoff format to come to Michigan.

I am contemplating heading up to Lansing on Friday to catch the SMCC/LCC game. Think they would let me ride the SMCC bus?

Do think Riverview should play Stockbridge and Flat Rock play Summit instead on Friday?

I don't think I have said this, Dan Kalbfleisch has done an excellent job turning around the Huron program.

If I give the Grosse Ile offensive line some credit, will my heckler go away? ;)

If you had to pick one player in the league to start a team, who would it be?

Another playoff match up I would like to see is SMCC defending Michigan Collegiate's spread.

I think the bantering on here has gotten out of hand. Thank you to the thoughtful posters and to those of you who aren't, go away!

I hope my Alma Mater does a big time search for a football coach and offers a teaching job with it. I hear Eric Taylor is available these days.

I am ready for the playoffs, too many bad week nine match ups in the league.

Congrats to my boy OC on his new Athletic Director position. Flat Rock's loss is Dundee's gain!

Rivalry Week

It has been a good year in the Huron League this season. I like that the last week of the league season is for rivalry week. It keeps many people interested in the season and the blog until late in the year.

Football is a unique sport. For the most part it is just played here in the United States. Many times people get to caught up in the winning and losing of football. What they don't see is the weekly preparation and the tiredless offseason that kids and coaches put into the sports that they love.

It is easy to be critical of anyone who doesn't have success on the gridiron, but isn't the purpose of a game like football to just compete?

Rivalry week usually brings the best out of all the teams involved. The rival always knows that they are going to get the other teams best effort. Nobody is going to lay down, no matter what the pundits say that their chances are.

Enjoy this week of football, it is one of the best weeks of the football year. One of my all time favorite movie quotes is from Braveheart. It comes from the  Scottish character Malcolm Wallace when referencing an apparent war with the English. He says, "we do not have to beat them, just fight them".

Have fun kids!

Airport @ Milan

Milan (3-4) is coming off of a 42-14 victory over Flat Rock while Airport (3-4) fell at home to Huron 21-14. Milan won last seasons game 29-19 and have won three in a row over the Jets.

Milan has struggled this season with injuries and depth. Both the offense and defense have been good at times, but have been mostly inconsistent.

Airport lost a golden opportunity last week to possibly get a playoff spot after the Jets blew a 14-0 3rd quarter lead. The running game continues to impress, but the defense will need to step up this week.

This should be a close contest that goes either way. Tough pick, but the way the Big Reds turn it over has me picking the Jets. Prediction: Airport 21 Milan 14

Jefferson @ SMCC

SMCC (7-0) is coming off of a 33-0 win over Riverview while Jefferson (1-6) fell to Grosse Ile 49-7. The Falcons won last years game 48-34 and have won four of the last five games.

SMCC continues to keep doing what they do. They have weathered injuries, ran the ball and have played outstanding defense each week.

Jefferson continues to struggle, especially defensively, although the Bears scoring defense has improved over a year ago The passing game has been effective at times, but scoring is down significantly for the Bears this season.

This may be the best rivalry in the league, but this will be a one sided affair. Prediction: SMCC 45 Jefferson 6

Monday, October 13, 2014

Riverview @ Grosse Ile

Grosse Ile (5-2) is coming off of a 49-7 victory over Jefferson and Riverview (5-2) is coming off of a 33-0 loss to SMCC.  The Pirates won last years league finale 45-42. These teams have split the last twelve regular season games.

Grosse Ile has really rebounded well after a slow start to the first half of the season. The come back against Milan has catapulted the Red Devils to a solid season. The defense has been very good while a diversified offense is putting up just enough points.

Riverview was flying high the first half of the season, but have lost two of the last three games. The Pirate defense will need to shore things up while the offense will have to regain the form it had early on.

This is a great match up. These teams literally go back and forth each year on who wins the game. A win for either team may help secure a home playoff game.

If I go by the year and my early season forecast, I should pick Grosse Ile.  If I go by Riverview's size, I should pick them. The Pirates looked really slow last week against SMCC, but something tells me they are going to win this battle for the Colvin Cup. Prediction: Riverview 28 Grosse Ile 27

Flat Rock @ Huron

Huron (6-1) is coming off of a 21-14 come-from-behind victory over Airport while Flat Rock (0-7) lost to Milan 42-14. Huron won last years game 48-7 while Flat Rock has won six of the last ten games in the series.

Huron continues to run the ball well while throwing just enough to keep teams honest. The defense has been one of the top defenses in the league for most of the year.

Flat Rock is still winless on the season and their losing streak has reached sixteen straight games. The Rams need to find a way to move the ball while keeping the clock moving. On defense Flat Rock will need to tackle better they have for most of the season.

This is a big rivalry game and there should be a big crowd on hand for Huron's homecoming. Unfortunately, this game will get out of hand early. Prediction: Huron 49 Flat Rock 13

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Is SMCC's defense as good as the 1991 defense that propelled the Falcons to a state title?

That was the best 2nd half Huron has played all season.

Grosse Ile is playing angry

Milan needed that.

I knew what the outcome would be, but I thought Riverview would score.

What sayeth the Airport faithful ?

Don't worry Bear fans, UPSM is coming soon.

Rams played better for a half this week.

Is Andrew Mitroka back?

Looks like four Huron League teams will get into the playoffs.

Who is SMCC's most valuable player?

Huron League Coach of the Year?

I think the league is pretty good this year.

In case you were wondering Carter Paddy had thirteen tackles Friday.

News flash people, the best three defenses in the league belong to the top three teams.

I think the Rams may have to wait until 2015 to get a win.

If you need a Friday off, St. John's Waltz is hosting a Wild Game Dinner at the Carleton VFW this week. Tickets $50, Doors open at 6 pm. Email me if interested huronleaguefootball@gmail.com

Milan @ Flat Rock

Both teams are coming off of big losses. Milan (2-4) fell to SMCC  43-0 while Flat Rock lost to Riverview 53-6. The Big Reds have won the last two in the series including last years 48-14 victory.

Milan needs to regroup after last week. There is no better place to start than the running game. Look for Milan to not throw a single pass this week, while the defense gets better after giving up 35 ppg the last three weeks.

Flat Rock keeps trying to make strides. Statistics say the Rams are getting better, but it hasn't mattered in the won/loss column.

Milan may look to take out some frustration on the Rams, this may be a contest for a half. Prediction: Milan 35 Flat Rock 7

Grosse Ile @ Jefferson

Grosse Ile (4-2) is coming off of a 34-14 victory over Airport While Jefferson (1-5) fell to Huron 38-14. The Red Devils won last years game 20-12 and have won three in a row in the yearly series.

Grosse Ile came to life last week and throttled a solid Airport team. The offense seems to be clicking both through the air and on the ground. The defense seems to be playing better, but depth continues to be a problem.

Jefferson is still throwing the ball around everywhere, but looked like they were able run the ball at times last week. The defense has been giving up too many points and needs to find a way to stop somebody.

Jefferson looks like they're improving, but Grosse Ile is looking like a team that nobody is going to want to play. Prediction: Grosse Ile 34 Jefferson 14

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Huron @ Airport

Huron (5-1) is coming off of a 38-14 win over Jefferson while Airport (3-3) fell to Grosse Ile 34-14. Huron won last seasons game 28-21 which was the Chief's first victory in 29 years over the Jets.

Huron has been running the ball extremely well lately with three different players getting regular carries. The defense has played well all season especially in the 1st half.

Airport was surprised last week by Grosse Ile and their passing game. The Jets offense excels offensively by running the ball just as the defense is better at stopping the run.

This should be a competitive game and I like the Jets chances against the Chiefs. Many times football is about match ups and these two teams match up very well. I don't see an upset here, but the point spread will be small. Prediction: Huron 24 Airport 21

SMCC @ Riverview

SMCC (6-0) is coming off of a 43-0 drubbing of Milan while Riverview (5-1) hammered Flat Rock 53-6. The Falcons won a shootout last season and have taken four of the last five in the series. These two teams are considered the traditional powers of the league based on all-time winning percentages.

SMCC continues it's dominance of the league with the same rushing attack along with an opportunistic passing attack. The defense ranks one of the best in the state and has given up just 14 points in 5 league games.

Riverview has simply reloaded from last season. The running game has been solid and the Pirates are capable of throwing the ball if necessary. The Pirate defense has been solid as well this year and are giving up 12 ppg if league play.

This should be the stiffest test that SMCC will face in the regular season. The Pirates are big and athletic and should be able to move the ball. Stopping the Falcons will be a different story.

Although there is one more league game left after this week, this amounts to a championship game. If Riverview wins they could get a share of the title, if SMCC wins they most likely win the championship outright. Prediction SMCC 32 Riverview 14

Monday, October 6, 2014

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

I think SMCC took out two years of frustration on Milan Friday.

Huron's offensive line was impressive on Friday.

That is the Grosse Ile team that everyone expected.

Riverview showed some class this week against Flat Rock

Looks like the playoffs are all but gone for Milan this season

It was fun to watch Jefferson throw the ball around on Friday.

Airport played Grosse Ile on the wrong day.

Looks like the Rams were in it for a quarter on Friday

How many interceptions does SMCC's Bryce Windham have on the season?

Huron's Devin Collins did a great job on Jefferson's Brandon Liparoto Friday.

GI's Andrew Mitroka threw for 200 yards Friday.

Riverview has a very good offensive line.

Not having a JV team two years ago is finally catching up with Milan.

You have to be able to defend the pass people.

SMCC/Riverview could be a good game.

If you could pick one league QB, who would it be?

Jefferson's Carter Paddy is a really good football player. I swear he made every tackle on Friday.

Anyone still think Airport is making the playoffs?

Blog Decorum

I usually post this every year but please note that I do not allow some comments to come through and be posted on the blog. This is for numerous reasons. I don't want the blog to turn into a bashing forum. We can save that for mlive or twitter.

Players are off limits to call out and be critical of. They are just kids who are playing a game that they happen to love. I usually allow some criticism of coaches and their coaching decisions because they are paid professionals. They know this and most don't seem to mind.

Also, if you ever need to contact me you can send me an email @ huronleaguefootball@gmail.com. I get tons of fan mail on a daily basis.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Riverview @ Flat Rock

Riverview (4-1) is coming off of a 24-20 Homecoming loss to Huron while Flat Rock (0-5) fell again to Jefferson 35-14. Riverview won last years game 71-7, but have only won three of the last seven in the series.

The Rams had the opportunity to get a win last week, but came up well short in a game filled with turnovers and penalities. The Rams need to shorten the game and the opponents posessions by taking care of the ball this week

Riverview had been flying high all season until last weeks loss to Huron. RB Eric Gant was effective in the first quarter last week before being neutralized, but should have a big game this week. Look for the Riverview defense to have a big game this week.

This game should be over early as the Pirates will no doubt be in a bad mood after last week. Prediction: Riverview 40 Flat Rock 7

Jefferson @ Huron

Huron (4-1) is coming off of their biggest win in years after beating Riverview 24-20 while Jefferson (1-4) got their first win of the season by beating Flat Rock 35-14. Huron won last seasons game 48-34 and has won four of the last five in the series.

Jefferson got a much needed win last week and did so behind the strengths of QB Justin Kull. The defense was better last week against the Rams as they forced numerous turnovers.

Huron used the ground game effectively again last week with QB Matt Hartwick leading the way for the Chiefs. The defense was solid through three quarters before falling into a prevent most of the fourth.

Jefferson's strength in the passing game appears to be something that could give the Chiefs some problems. Rain in the forecast may put a damper on that a bit for the Bears. Huron seems focused on a march to the playoffs. Prediction: Huron 31 Jefferson 14
