Airport @ SMCC

Airport (1-4) lost at Flat Rock last week 34-28 while SMCC (5-0) defeated Grosse Ile 35-7. SMCC won last year's game 28-7 and leads the all-time series 42-10.

Airport continues to be led by senior RB Dylan Meiring. The defense struggled last week against Flat Rock and will have a huge task in stopping the Falcon offense this week.

SMCC continues to put up gaudy numbers on the ground while the defense has given up just 38 points in the last four games.

Both teams are headed in opposite directions. SMCC appears poised for a week 7 showdown with Milan. Pick: SMCC 28 Airport 0

Riverview @ Huron

Riverview (3-2) is coming off of a 42-7 win over Jefferson while Huron (2-3) lost at Milan 47-21. Huron won last year's league game 24-20 along with a playoff game against the Pirates 40-21. Riverview leads 35-7 in all-time games.

Riverview is on the upswing in recent weeks. The defense continues to be solid. Tyler Chase leads a defense that is give up 13 ppg. The offense is led by senior workhorse RB Eric Gant.

Huron needs to turn the ship around this week. The defense has been less than stellar while the offense has been sporadic at best.

This is a big game for both teams. A loss will all but eliminate the Chiefs from the playoffs while a loss by the Pirates would force them to win out against a tough remaining schedule. Pick: Huron 21 Riverview 20

Jefferson @ Flat Rock

Jefferson (1-4) is coming off of a 42-7  loss to Riverview while Flat Rock (2-3) beat Airport 34-28. Jefferson won last year's game 35-14 and leads the all-time series 32-18-1.

Jefferson will look to establish their running game against the Rams while using the pass when necessary. The defense led by DE Cory Wilkins will look to stop the Bear's losing streak at three.

Flat Rock has been playing better lately getting their first league win since 2012. The offense has shown they are capable of scoring, but the defense will need to step up and stop someone if the wins are going to keep coming.

This is a winnable game for both teams. A Flat Rock win would be great for the Ram's future while a Jefferson loss could be the worst thing for a once proud program. Pick: Jefferson 28 Flat Rock 20.

Milan @ Grosse Ile

Milan (4-1) is coming off of a 47-21 homecoming victory over Huron while Grosse Ile (2-3) fell hard at SMCC 35-7. GI won last years game 38-36, but Milan leads the all-time series 17-9.

Milan is playing very well right now. The offense has been virtually unstoppable with Demetrius Barnes and Trace Lindeman. The two have combined for nearly 1,200 yards and have scored 12 rushing TD's. The LB's have been the strength of the Big Red's defense led by senior Cortez Gray.

Grosse Ile just ran into a better team last week. The Red Devil offense is led by two juniors in RB Andrew Vollmerhausen and QB Justin Moores. The defense is led Josh Moskall and Sean Cuddy.

GI most likely needs to win out to qualify for the playoffs, but Milan is just too good right now and is capable of making a long playoff run if they stay healthy. Pick: Milan 41 Grosse Ile 21

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

SMCC has won 13 straight Huron League games.

My first pick to start a team from the Huron League is Milan's Trace Lindeman.

Riverview is picking up steam.

Congrats to Flat Rock on their first win over Airport since 2001.

I can't figure out if Grosse Ile is a good team or not.

I can't figure out if Huron is a good team or not.

What is going on with Jefferson?

What is going on with Airport?

SMCC's Hunter Coombe is a great High School football player. Have you ever heard of him?

Milan's Cortez Gray reminds me of Huron's Tyler Weclowski from 2009. Both great LB's!

Week 6 Huron League Game of the Week?

Flat Rock's Justin Roberts is fun to watch!

Early thoughts on Huron League Coach of the Year?

Someone's playoff hopes could take a huge hit in New Boston this week.

Airport @ Flat Rock

Airport (1-3) is coming off of a 41-19 loss to Riverview while Flat Rock (1-3) lost at Grosse Ile 56-14. Airport won last year's game 56-21 and leads the all-time series 30-26.

Airport's usually solid defense was scorched last week by Riverview. Senior RB Dylan Meiring was his usual self on offense and will most likely get a bulk of the carries this week.

Flat Rock played a solid first half last week against Grosse Ile until the wheels came off. Senior QB Justin Roberts continues to be a bright spot for the Rams.

This is a great rivalry that has sputtered somewhat over the last 20 years. This could be a good game, but I think Airport's defense and ground game will be too much. Pick: Airport 28 Flat Rock 13

Riverview @ Jefferson

Riverview (2-2) is coming off of a 41-19 victory over Airport while Jefferson (1-3) fell to Milan 50-15. The Bucs won last year's game 37-6 and lead the all-time series 20-16.

Riverview rebounded nicely last week against Airport. The defense has been solid all year and should have their way with a Bear squad that has troubles scoring points.

Jefferson gave up a lot of points last week and will have problems stopping Riverview's rugged offense.

This one seems like an easy pick, but it may be closer depending on which Jefferson team shows up. Pick: Riverview 34 Jefferson 13

Grosse Ile @ SMCC

Thi is the Game of the Week in the Huron League. Grosse Ile (2-2) is coming off of a 56-14  victory over Flat Rock while SMCC (4-0) beat Huron 27-7. SMCC won last season's match up 28-0 and leads the all-time series 39-14-2.

The Red Devils have strung together back to back wins after losing at home to Jefferson. Senior RB/LB Tim Beach is quietly having a solid season on both sides of the ball for Grosse Ile while junior QB Justin Moores has been efficient and solid in his first year leading the team.

SMCC simply does what they do very well. They run the ball at you every play with one of three backs then surprise you with a pass. Senior Hunter Coombe has shown why he is one of the best two-way players in the league. First year Varsity Head Coach Adam Kipf and his staff have quickly settled into being a solid staff that is molding a team that is capable of making another long playoff run.

The Falcons have shown that they are very good at stopping the run, but will see a very different look this week as the Red Devils will spread the field and then use every weapon they have to exploit you. SMCC's defense is very good, but the secret to their success may be the fact that the offense eats up huge chunks of time with each possession. Pick: SMCC 34 Grosse Ile 19

Huron @ Milan

MIlan (3-1) is coming off of a 50-15 win over Jefferson while Huron (2-2) is coming off of a home loss to SMCC 27-7. Huron won last season's game 28-14, but Milan leads the all-time series 19-2.

Milan has showed both their offensive and defensive fire power lately. The offense is led by juniors Demetrius Barnes and Trace Lineman. The two have combined for 844 yards and 8 TD's on the ground through four games. The defense is giving up just 12 points per game and is led by seniors Cortez Gray and Quintell Moore.

Huron has dropped two straight and desperately needs a win. The Chiefs are led by Matt Hartwick who has run and thrown for over 800 yards and has accounted for 8 TD's. Defensively the Chiefs have struggled lately. The defense is led by junior LB Nik Becker.

This is a make or break game for Huron. They are pretty much eliminated from the league title chase, but still have a shot at the playoffs. Milan can afford a slip up here and still win at least a share of a league title by winning out. This could be a great game, but it depends which Huron team decides to show up. Pick: Milan 27 Huron 17

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Brilliant win by Adam Kipf and SMCC.

Is anyone on the Milan bandwagon yet?

Riverview flexed their offensive muscle.

Grosse Ile will find out where they stand real soon.

Huron better get busy or they will be sitting home in week 10.

What's up with Jefferson?

Same with Airport.

Keep your head up Rams!

Should SMCC be complaining to anyone about facilities?

Is the league down overall from last season? I know this answer.

Don't look now, but Marshall is 3-1.

Should I even go to a game this week?

Huron and Riverview will both need to win a tough game to qualify for the playoffs.

Thank you Double D for the buffer this week. Not sure I can do it again though.

SMCC @ Huron

This is the Huron League Game of the Week. SMCC (3-0) is coming off of a 43-12 victory over Flat Rock while Huron (2-1) is still sore from a 31-26 loss to Grosse Ile. SMCC won last year's game by a convincing score of 40-7. The Falcons lead the all-time series 45-1.

SMCC keeps getting better every week. They will look to pound the ball on the ground and be opportunistic with the pass against the Chief secondary.

Huron must find a way to recover after being scorched on the ground last week. On offense look for the Chiefs to dig a little deeper in the playbook this week and get some of their lesser known weapons involved against the Falcon secondary.

Early on, I thought Huron had the team to beat the Falcons for only the second time in school history. Now I'm not so sure. This should be a good game, but I will side with history. Pick SMCC 26 Huron 17

Jefferson @ Milan

Jefferson (1-2) is coming off of a hard fought 7-0 loss to Airport while Milan (2-1) is coming off of a 27-7 victory over Riverview. The Big Reds won last season's game 34-0 and lead the all-time series 12-8-1.

Jefferson's defense has played very well the last six quarters, but the offense needs to pick things up this week if they expect to be in this game.

Milan looked like the team that some picked to win the league last week. The offense is diverse and the defense is physical and fast.

Milan boast a ton of seniors and experienced players. Team that with an excellent young football coach in Jesse Hoskins and you can see why I picked them where I did. Pick: Milan 28 Jefferson 6

Riverview @ Airport

Riverview (1-2) is coming off of a disappointing 27-7 home loss to Milan while Airport (1-2) is coming off of their first win of the season as they beat Jefferson 7-0. Riverview won last season's game 34-19 and leads the all-time series 22-15.

Riverview is looking to get back in the win column. Hopefully senior LB/FB Tyler Chase will be back in the line up for the Bucs. Look for more smash mouth style offense and defense this week from Riverview.

Airport will use their usual run happy offense and hope to keep things close with their solid defense. Look for a lot of senior RB Dylan Meiring.

The two teams are going to line it up and go right at each other. I'm not sure you want to do that with a team as physical as Riverview. Pick: Riverview 20 Airport 7

Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Flat Rock @ Grosse Ile

Flat Rock (1-2) is coming off of a 43-12 loss to SMCC while Grosse Ile (1-2) is coming off of a 31-26 upset victory over previously unbeaten Huron. The Red Devils won last year's game 42-7 and lead the all-time series 36-29.

Flat Rock enters what appears to be a slight lull in the schedule. The Rams have been playing better lately, but playing two of the top teams in the league has hurt. The offense revolves around senior QB Justin Roberts.

Grosse Ile is still flying high after beating the Chiefs last week. The Red Devils racked up 263 rushing yards on just 23 carries in the win. The defense was once again by senior LB Sean Cuddy.

This is an intriguing game that has the Jekyll and Hyde Islanders against an improved Ram team. Both teams sit at 1-2 and a victory for either could help their seasons immensely. Pick: Grosse Ile 31 Flat Rock 19

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Milan made me look really smart this week.

Grosse Ile made me look really dumb this week.

I told people Airport is good defensively.

The league title is still SMCC's until someone takes it.

Riverview missed Tyler Chase Friday.

Maybe got caught peaking?

Maybe Jefferson should diversify the offense a bit.

Is Flat Rock really getting better?

Didn't I suggest a month back that Jon Bodner was the best coach in the league?

Riverview has the best concessions in the league. Anyone ever had their double cheeseburger straight off of the grill?

The league could get crazy real quick.

Have to love the October football weather.

Football is usually about talent, but many times match ups matter most.

What was up with all the penalties on the island Friday?

SMCC @ Huron is the Game of the Week in week 4.

Many people think Harbaugh is Bo reincarnated, seems a little more Woody to me.

This is Sparta!

Forward down the field!

Milan @ Riverview

This is the Game of the Week in the Huron League. Milan (1-1) is coming off of a 55-6 victory over Flat Rock while Riverview (1-1) fell to SMCC 14-12. Riverview won last season's game 21-7 and leads the all time series 9-7.

Milan is fully healthy now with the return of junior RB Trace Lindeman. He along with junior QB Demetrius Barnes give the Big Reds an extremely potent offense. The Big Red defense is led by senior LB Cortez Gray.

Riverview was plagued by turnovers last week. Look for the Pirates to try and run the ball as much as possible in an effort to shorten the game. The Riverview defense is led by senior LB Tyler Chase.

This should be a great game. A healthy high powered spread offense by Milan against a very physical Pirate defense. This game may come down to Riverview's ability to score points off of Milan's turnovers. I think Milan's overall team speed will be the difference. Pick: Milan 20 Riverview 19

SMCC @ Flat Rock

SMCC (2-0) defeated Riverview 14-12 last week while Flat Rock (1-1) fell to Milan 55-6. SMCC won last year's game 42-0 and have won 13 in a row against the Rams. The Falcons lead the all time series 45-10-1.

SMCC passed a big test against a rugged Riverview team last week. Expect the Falcons to keep it on the ground this week. The Falcon defense forced 4 turnovers last week.

Flat Rock was humbled a bit last week by Milan. This week should be another tough test for the rebuilding Rams before the schedule eases up a little the next three weeks.

This game most likely won't be close but don't expect the Rams to simply lie down for the Falcons. Pick: SMCC 41 Flat Rock 13

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

Huron @ Grosse Ile

Huron (2-0) is coming off of a 29-7 victory over Airport while Grosse Ile (0-2) lost 21-18 to Jefferson. Huron shutout the Red Devils last season 35-0. Grosse Ile leads the all time series 39-11.

Offensively the Chiefs will rely on a balanced attack that features both the run and the pass. The defense is led by little known junior LB Nik Becker and a very good defensive line.

Grosse Ile is struggling to run the ball and must get better at it if they hope to pull off an upset. The defense is active, but too many tackles are being made by the defensive secondary.

Grosse Ile expected to be 2-0 at this point while the Chiefs are where most people expected them to be at this point, well except me. Guess I blew that. Pick: Huron 38 Grosse Ile 13

Airport @ Jefferson

Jefferson (1-1) beat Grosse Ile last week 21-18 while Airport (0-2) fell at Huron 29-7. The Jets won last season's match up 31-21 and leads the all-time series 29-25.

The Bears went back to their roots and racked up over 300 yards on the ground against Grosse Ile. Look for the tandem of Nick Humphrey and Brandon Sovey to get the ball early and often in this game.

Airport played fairly well defensively against Huron last week, but the offense struggled for the 2nd consecutive week. The Jets must find another weapon besides Dylan Meiring if they plan on winning this week.

Going into the season I would have picked Airport, now I am not so sure. This could be a defensive struggle and probably a good game to go see this week. Pick: Airport 13 Jefferson 10

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

When was the last time SMCC was held to 64 yards rushing?

I assuming Milan's Trace Lindeman will be fully healthy for the Riverview game.

Huron's Mike Suchy is a very good Defensive Coordinator. He doesn't get enough credit.

Looks like Jefferson went "back to the beach" with that running game. Over 309 yards on the ground.

Riverview must be very good defensively.

It doesn't get any easier for Flat Rock this week.

Airport's Darryl Mossburg is a very good Defensive Coordinator. That game Friday should have not have been that close.

It doesn't get any easier for Grosse Ile this week.

What Huron League player would take first to start a team with?

I think I overestimated how good Airport and Grosse Ile would be.

It is kind of laughable how comments come and go about teams after they win or lose.

You ever have to sit at a game next to someone you aren't really fond of?

Was anyone impressed with Harbaugh and Michigan on Thursday?

Was anyone impressed with Michigan State on Friday?

Week 2 Stars

Cortez Gray Milan, the senior RB/LB carried for 82 yards and 3 TD's and also recorded 10 tackles in the Big Red's 55-6 victory over Flat Rock.

Hunter Morse Huron, the junior kicker booted a school record 48 yard FG and also boomed 4 kick offs into the end zone in Huron's 29-7 win over Airport.

Austin Burger SMCC, the senior QB/DB threw for 129 yards and 2 TD's and also recorded 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery in the Falcon's 14-12 victory over Riverview.

Nick Humphrey Jefferson, the junior RB ran for 197 yards and 2 TD's in the Bears 21-18 upset victory over Grosse Ile.

Riverview @ SMCC

Both Riverview and SMCC won their season openers. Riverview trounced Ecorse 47-0 while SMCC crushed Tecumseh 62-39. The Falcons won last year's game 33-0 and lead the all time series 26-12.

Riverview is led on offense by junior QB Donnell Williams and senior RB Eric Gant. Defensively the Pirates are led by Tyler Chase and Wyatt Gardocki.

SMCC will run their typical explosive straight T offense which features one of the best backs in the league in Justin Carrabino. The Falcon defense will look to shore things up after giving up 39 points last week.

This is the game of the week in the Huron League and should give the winner a league up on a run to the league title. This should be a slugfest that features a bunch of yards on the ground. Pick: SMCC 27 Riverview 21

Airport @ Huron

Airport is coming off of a 24-8 opening night loss to Adrian while Huron beat Avondale 49-6 in week 1. Huron won last year's meeting 21-14, but Airport leads the overall series 43-11.

Airport struggled to move the ball against the Maples. Dylan Meiring and Bryce Cole will need to have a big game offensively to pull off an upset. The defense will need to improve as well. Look for the Jets to stack the line and try and stop the Chief running game.

Huron seemed to be clicking on all cylinders last week. Matt Hartwick looked like he is ready to have a monster season. While the defense looked fast and physical.

This is a match up that I liked for the Jets over a week ago. Huron looked really good in the opener and unfortunately Airport didn't. Pick: Huron 31 Airport 13

Flat Rock @ Milan

Flat Rock is coming off of a 60-6 victory over Summit Academy while Milan lost to Marshall 20-19. Milan won last year's game 42-14 and lead the all time series 23-10.

Flat Rock looked good getting their first win in over two years. The Rams will get a chance to find out how much they have improved when they meet the Big Reds. Seniors Justin Roberts and Jalen Smith will lead Flat Rock's offense again this week. Zac Tennison and Anthony Higginbotham will lead a defense that will be forced to tackle in space against Milan.

Milan will most likely be welcoming Trace Lindeman back to the line up this week although don't be surprised if he sits out until the following week. Junior QB Demetrius Barnes has emerged as a serious home run threat on every snap of the ball. Cortez Gray leads a physical Big Reds defense.

I would like to think this would be a close game, but this appears to be a mismatch. Flat Rock has really improved, but Milan will challenge for a league title. Pick: Milan 34 Flat Rock 13
