SMCC 50 Airport 28 final

Riverview 6 Huron 7 final

Huron @ Riverview

Be sure to check out the podcast: Huron @ Riverview

Huron (3-2) is coming off of a 42-7 loss to Milan while Riverview (1-4) lost to Jefferson 28-8. Riverview won last season's game 22-7 and lead the all-time series 38-5.

Huron has had trouble scoring the last few games. Senior QB Joe Camilla will have to find a way to get the ball to his playmakers. The defense plays very well at times, but has a bad habit sometimes of letting teams off of the hook.

Riverview has been plagued by injuries and is playing a very young line up right now. The offense has struggled, but has shown flashes at times this season. The defense is giving up 31 ppg.

This is another game that should be close. Riverview at home could be a factor, as well as, the weather. Heavy rain would favor the Pirates.

SMCC @ Airport

Be sure to check out the podcast: SMCC @ Airport

SMCC (2-3) is coming off of a 28-0 loss to Grosse Ile while Airport (1-4) lost to Flat Rock  22-3. SMCC won last years contest by a score of 49-7 and lead the all-time series 43-10.

The Falcons were shut out last week and turned the ball over 3 times against Grosse Ile.  SMCC will continue to run their straight T formation with three backs and the QB getting chances to run the ball. The defense which has played well enough all season is led by Justin LaPlante and Wyatt O'Brien.

Airport has struggled to score as of late and are averaging less than 10 ppg in Huron League play. Junior RB Michael Foor continues to get a bulk of the carries for the Jets. The defense has been roughed up lately and still has the bulk of their schedule coming up.

Both teams are in need of a win. The Falcons are the defending league champs, but has lost two in a row. Airport had high hopes entering the season with a host of starters returning on both sides of the ball, but are staring directly at another possible 1-8 season.

Check out the podcast for my prediction: Click Here

Flat Rock @ Jefferson

Be sure to check out the podcast: Flat Rock @ Jefferson

Flat Rock (2-3) is coming off of a 22-3 victory over Airport while Jefferson (2-3) beat Riverview 28-8. Jefferson won last year's game 20-6 and lead the all-time series 33-18-1.

Flat Rock recorded it's second win of the season last week. RB Sage Daniels and QB Jacob Dotson combined for nearly 260 yards in that game and will be called on to do more of the same against the Bears. The Ram defense had their best effort of the season since week one against the Jets.

Jefferson continues to be led by a strong running game. QB Brandon Sovey and  RB Nick Humphrey will continue to carry a bulk of the load on the ground. The Bears defense will be challenged by Flat Rock's diverse offense.

This should be another competitive game in the league on Friday. Both teams have played the toughest part of the schedule and the winner still may have a shot at the playoffs. Check out the podcast for my prediction: Click Here

Grosse Ile @ Milan

Be sure to check out the podcast: Grosse Ile @ Milan

Grosse Ile (5-0) is coming off of an impressive 28-0 win over SMCC while Milan (5-0) beat Huron 42-7 in New Boston. Milan won last year's game 44-7 and lead the all-time series 18-9.

Grosse Ile had another outstanding week running the ball as they rushed for 292 yards against SMCC.   Senior RB Andrew Vollmerhausen leads the charge again this week, but will have help from fellow seniors; Josh Sheppard, Josh Moskall and Justin  Moores. The defense has been outstanding and is led by seniors; Dominic Trombley, Aaron Blanzy, Holden Green and Owen Wiewiura.

Milan rolled up 388 yards on the ground last week against Huron. Demetrius Barnes and Trace Lindeman once again will lead the Big Red ground attack. The defense is led by seniors Mike Furtney, Austin Reed and Brian Blansett. Freshman Tristin Hines is a star in the making and leads the league in interceptions with five.

This is most likely a pick'em game that could go either way. Both teams run the ball well and are opportunistic with the pass. Each team has a physical defense that can limit the others ground game.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

Grosse Ile's defense is extremely fast and physical.

Did I really see a double reverse, double pass for a TD Friday night?

Bear down!

Do they still play for the jug?

I could be spot on with my SMCC preseason prediction.

Nine in the box?

The injury bug sux.

Are people still sleeping on the Jets?

Should be a huge crowd at Milan on Friday.

Every coach and player work hard, some coaches and players work harder than others.

Why would any coach care what I think?

I need to get out and see my alma mater.

Two best coaches in the league will meet on Friday.

Which team has the best chance of winning out, Jefferson or Flat Rock?

I still think we may have a tie for the league title this year.

I plan on doing video on Saturday mornings next year.

On Wisconsin!

Jefferson @ Riverview

Be sure to check out the podcast: Jefferson @ Riverview

Jefferson (1-3) fell to Milan 35-31 while Riverview (1-3) picked up their first win of the season with a 30-14 victory over Airport. The Pirates defeated the Bears last year by a score of 42-7 and lead the all-time series 21-16.

Jefferson played well last week against Milan. Nick Humphrey has been very good on both sides of the ball for the Bears. Senior QB Brandon Sovey has been solid all season for the Bears.

Offensively junior RB Zack Guthrie had a big week against Airport while junior RB Cam Rogers continues to be productive in the Buc running game.  Riverview is coming off of the best defensive effort of the season against Airport.

The is basically a pick'em game. Both teams are kind of a mirror image of each other and both have lost some of their  better players to season ending injuries. Probably just going to flip a coin on this one. Just kidding. Check out the podcast to get a prediction for the game. Click Here

Milan @ Huron

Be sure to check out the podcast. Milan @ Huron

Milan (4-0) defeated Jefferson last week in a thrilling game 35-31 while Huron (3-1) beat SMCC down in Monroe 7-6. The Big Reds won last year's game 47-21 and lead the all-time series 20-2.

Milan continues to do what they do on offensive. They spread the field with great skill people, look at match ups then use their speed to exploit the other team. The defense has been good enough this season to help secure an undefeated season so far.

Huron played very well defensively last week against SMCC. The offense struggled a bit and was dealt a solid blow when junior QB Brett McKay went out with a knee injury. The Chief offense will be led this week by junior RB Reed Smith and senior RB Drew Leininger. The Chief defense will need to focus on tackling in space against the Milan speed.

This should be another good game and a Milan victory could set up the anticipated match up of undefeated teams next week when the Big Reds host Grosse Ile. Look for the Chiefs to pound the ball on the ground this week in hopes of keeping the Big Red high scoring offense off of the field. Check out the podcast for my prediction. Click Here

SMCC @ Grosse Ile

Be sure to check out the podcast. SMCC @ Grosse Ile

SMCC (2-2) is coming off of a 7-6 home loss to Huron while Grosse Ile (4-0) continued their undefeated season with a 49-20 victory over Flat Rock. The Falcons won the game last year in Monroe by a score of 35-7 and lead the all-time series 40-14-2.

SMCC will look to rebound this week by using their punishing ground game against perhaps the best rushing defense in the league. Junior Collin Woolford and senior Kevin LaPrad are a threat to go the distance every time they touch the ball. Defensively, the Falcons have been solid most weeks and will match up with a very capable Red Devil ground game.

Grosse Ile continues their improbable march to an undefeated season. The Red Devils rushed for over 400 yards against Flat Rock last week and rely on the power running of seniors Andrew Vollmerhausen and Josh Moskall. The defense has been stout against the run all season as senior Dominic Trembly anchors a very good Red Devil defensive line.

This ought to be a great match up between two teams who like to run the ball. The game could be decided through the air as senior WR Justin Moores against the Falcon secondary is a key match up to watch. A win here for the Islanders could set up an undefeated showdown against Milan next week, but don't count out the defending league champs just yet. Check out the podcast for my prediction: Click here

Flat Rock @ Airport

Be Sure to check out the podcast: Flat Rock @ Airport

Flat Rock (1-3) suffered their third straight defeat in their 49-20 loss against Grosse Ile while Airport (1-3) suffered it's 3rd straight loss after an opening week win over Dundee as the Jets fell 30-14 to Riverview. Flat Rock won last season's matchup in OT as the Rams won 34-28, but Airport leads the all-time series 30-27.

Flat Rock once again played well in the first half against a quality opponent as the Rams finished their 3 week run against three of the better teams in the league. The offense has been balanced between the run and pass and relies on QB Jacob Dotson, RB Cameron Stitt and WR  Anthony Higginbotham. The defense still gives up too many points, but is consistently better than last season.

Airport's woes continued last week against Riverview and the Jets must find a way to right the ship. The offense still revolves around junior RB Michael Foor while junior Tanner Jeska continues to show he is a capable QB. The defense continues to be led by senior LB's Justin Goretski and Brent Mossburg.

This is a must win game for both teams. Flat Rock could find themselves in a positive position with the toughest part of their schedule behind them if they could get the win. Airport has the teeth of their schedule in weeks 6-8 and a win would give them some much needed confidence. Prediction: Airport 28 Flat Rock 26

Huron League Power Rankings

Here we go with the power rankings. What say you?

1) Grosse Ile 4-0, big tests coming up in the next two weeks.

2) Milan, 4-0, Big Reds will know how good they are over the next 3 weeks.

3) Huron 3-1, Chiefs played well enough to win.

4) SMCC 2-2, Falcons played well enough to win too.

5) Riverview 1-3, Pirates are getting better.

6) Jefferson 1-3, Bears awakening from hibernation?

7) Flat Rock 1-3, could possibly win remaining games.

8) Airport 1-3, don't really know what to say other than they finished 1-8 last season.

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

There is a very tough two weeks ahead.

Isn't the object of the game to outscore your opponent?

Special teams are important.

Players play, Coaches coach.

I like the new Stroh's.

Looks like the hibernation may be over.

Saw that same two point play attempt at least twice the week before.

Players play, coaches coach.

Game of the Week coming up?

I'm glad to see Josh Sheppard played this week.

Things should sort them themselves out this week or  really muddy the waters.

J.V. football matters to players, coaches and parents. That's why I post the scores on Thursday.

You can play the best defense in the world, but if you can't score, theoretically you would never win a game.

Look for expansion of the blog next season.

Many times "prevent defenses", prevent you from winning.

Blog Decorum

I usually post this every year. Remember this is a football blog to promote the game and the kids. I do allow some talk about the coaches and myself because we are all paid professionals.  Although we make peanuts in the grand scheme of things, it does help the integrity of the blog if we allow some criticism. Please remember what decorum means,  behavior in keeping with good taste. Thank you.

SMCC 6 Huron 7 Final

Grosse Ile 49 Flat Rock 20 Final

Airport 14 Riverview 30 Final

Milan 35 Jefferson 31 Final

Milan @ Jefferson

Be sure to check out the podcast. Milan @ Jefferson

Milan (3-0) is coming off of a 38-22 victory over Riverview while Jefferson (1-2) defeated Airport 20-7. Milan defeated Jefferson 50-15 last season and leads the all-time series 13-8-1.

Milan fell behind early last week against Riverview, but stormed back with a late 2nd quarter TD and an early 3rd quarter kick return for a TD. Trace Lindeman continues his brilliant four year career on both offense and defense while junior DT/OT Michael Furtney is becoming a future DI lineman.

Jefferson had played two very good teams in Grosse Ile and Ida and it showed when they played Airport last week. The Bears were able to force 6 miscues by the Jets and were able to put up enough points to get the win.

This doesn't look like a very good match up for the Bears. The Big Reds simply spread the field and exploit your weaknesses. Jefferson will need to force a few turnovers and maintain ball possession if they are going to have a shot at the upset. Prediction: Milan 34 Jefferson 19

Airport (1-2) is coming off of a 20-7 loss to Jefferson while Riverview (0-3) fell at Milan 38-22. The Pirates won last seasons game by a score of 41-19 and lead the all-time series 23-15.

Airport struggled with turnovers last week against Jefferson and is averaging just 10 ppg in league play. The defense has been solid at times, but has struggled when put in tough situations because of turnovers.

Riverview has played opponents with a combined 8-1 record. The offense has struggled at times , but was able to find the end zone last week at Milan. The defense is giving up nearly 38 ppg.

Both teams need a win right now. This should be a defensive struggle and will most likely be low scoring. Prediction: Airport 14 Riverview 13

Huron @ SMCC

Please check out the podcast: Huron @ SMCC

The Chiefs (2-1) are coming off of a 39-24 home loss to Grosse Ile while SMCC (2-1) picked up a 44-15 victory over Flat Rock at Navarre Field. The Falcons defeated the Chiefs last season 27-7 and lead the all-time series 46-1. Huron's only victory against the Falcons came 30 years ago when the Chiefs won 42-6.

Huron struggled to run the ball against GI last week. Junior QB Brett McKay was able to throw for 267 yards and 3 TD's in the loss. The Chief's senior LB Nik Becker continued his strong senior season as he recorded 10 tackles.

The Falcons continue to rely on senior RB  Kevin LaPrad and junior RB Collin Woolford. The running game continues to get better each week as the Catholics new offensive line gains valuable experience. SMCC's defense has only given up 21 points in league play after surrendering 30 in the season opener.

On paper this looks like a close game that could go either way. In the preseason I would have picked Huron in this match up, but the Falcons are playing much better than anticipated and they have reeled off 29 straight victories in the series. Prediction: SMCC 30 Huron 21

Grosse Ile @ Flat Rock

Please check out the podcast. Grosse Ile @ Flat Rock

Grosse Ile (3-0) is coming off of a 39-24 victory over Huron while Flat Rock (1-2) is coming off of a 44-15 loss to SMCC.  The Red Devil defeated the Rams last season by a score of 56-14 and lead the all-time series 37-29.

Grosse Ile surprised everyone in New Boston last week when Justin Moores handled the QB duties for the Red Devils. Moores did a solid job while Andrew Vollmerhausen stoled the show with 5 TD's. The defense has been led by one of the best DT's is the league in Dominic Trombley.

Flat Rock finishes the gauntlet of the Huron League elite this week and at this point is just hoping to survive. Anthony Higginbotham and Cameron Stitt were bright spots for the Rams last week while junior LB Sameer Tayeb continues to shine on defense.

Grosse Ile just appears to be too good for the Rams. Teams have really struggled to run the ball against the Red Devils and they are averaging a hefty 41 ppg. Prediction: Grosse Ile 41 Flat Rock 20

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

The Islanders continue their undefeated season.

Gotta love the home run ball.

The Falcon ground game looks as good as ever.

Do the Bears turn their season around?

I'm not sure why you run fake punt on your own 11 yard down 1 point with over 10 minutes left in the game.

The Pirates seem to be getting better.

It doesn't get any easier for Flat Rock.

Sometimes you need to stick with what you do best.

Game of the week this week?

Please give me your thoughts on the podcast. I am looking to improve them.

Right now Trace Lindeman and Andrew Vollmerhausen lead my Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year ballots.

How has the officiating been this season around the league?

Harbooger?

Riverview @ Milan

Riverview (0-2) fell to SMCC 44-6 at home last week while Milan (2-0) defeated Flat Rock 30-8. Milan won last years game by a score of 27-7. Riverview leads the all-time series 9-8.

Riverview has struggled the first two games mainly because of youth. Junior RB Cam Rogers has been a bright spot for the Pirates while junior DE Austin Boike has led the defense.

Milan struggled a bit last week with Flat Rock but seniors Trace Lindeman and Demetrius Barnes eventually broke open the game in the 2nd half. The defense has been solid all season with numerous Big Reds leading the way.

This looked like an early season marquee match up in August, but the teams are headed in different directions at this point. Prediction: Milan 28 Riverview 13

Jefferson @ Airport

Jefferson (0-2) is coming off of a 42-6 loss to Grosse Ile while Airport(1-1) lost at home to Huron 21-14. Airport won last years match up 7-0 and won nine straight in the series. The Jets leads the all-time series 30-25.

Jefferson has played two good opponents the first two weeks. The offense revolves around QB Brandon Sovey and RB Nick Humphrey. The defense is led by Cam Smith and Thomas Eads.

Airport let one slip away last week. Junior RB Mike Foor is a work horse on offense and QB Tanner Jeska has been opportunistic in the passing game. The defesne is led by LB's Brent Mossburg and Justin Goretski.

This game is always a battle. A victory for Jefferson could turn the season around. An Airport victory would stir early thoughts of playoffs for the Jets. Prediction: Airport 21 Jefferson 7

Flat Rock @ SMCC

Please be sure to check out the podcast. Flat Rock @ SMCC

Flat Rock (1-1) is coming off of a 30-8 loss to Milan while SMCC is fresh off of a 44-6 blowout victory over Riverview. The Falcons won last seasons game 43-12 and lead the all-time series 46-10-1.

Flat Rock showed flashes last week in the first half against Milan. Junior QB Jacob Dotson has been steady for the Rams while Sage Daniels has been solid at RB. Defensively junior LB Sameer Tayeb has led the way along with junior Mason Hamilton.

It appears the giant has awoken in Monroe after a week 1 loss for the Falcons which ended a 3 game program losing streak, the longest since 2002. Collin Woolford and Kevin LaPrad have led the Falcon running game while the defense continues to be led by Justin LaPlante.

While the Rams are getting better, SMCC hasn't lost to Flat Rock since the fall of 2001. That streak won't change this season. Prediction: SMCC 30 Flat Rock 13

Grosse Ile @ Huron

Please be sure to check out the podcast: Grosse Ile @ Huron

Please support our local sponsor: da Vinci's Brain (734) 790-8063

Grosse Ile (2-0) is coming off of a 42-6 thrashing of Jefferson while Huron (2-0) won at Airport 21-14.  The Red Devils won last season 31-26 on the island and lead the all-time series 40-11.

Grosse Ile has a very potent offense led by senior QB Josh Sheppard. He has numerous offensive threats with him including Josh Moskall who is extremely hard to tackle. Defensively Aaron Blanzy and Owen Wiewiura lead the Red Devils.

Junior QB Brett McKay has led the Chiefs in rushing each of the first two weeks of the season. Sophomore Brent Wright is a weapon that the Chiefs will start using more as the season goes on. On defense the Chiefs rely on junior Mark Leidel and senior Nathan Ping.

This is a very good matchup and could be a high scoring affair or a defensive struggle. I will take a combination of the two. Prediction: Grosse Ile 20 Huron 17

Huron League Thoughts and Questions

They are still the defending champs.

Grosse Ile may be the most physical team in the Huron League.

Every time the ball is put in play by Milan, there is a threat of a home run.

No star called Sirius at Huron, but plenty of them to make a constellation.

What is up at Riverview? Too much youth or just better competition?

Jefferson will be alright

It's almost dawn at FR. I can sense it.

I would have liked to been a fly on the wall during the Milan halftime Friday.

Parent Credo: Loss; it's the coach. Win; it's the players. (You know it's true people. Don't be afraid to look in the mirror.)

A tale of two T's?

Is it about winning the game or creating a highlight reel?

It must be tough to be an official.

Football is an emotional game.

One really big game next week should help sort some things out in the league.

We sure could use a few more sensible fathers at our Saturday Morning breakfasts.

I was really impressed with Chris Evans and Mike Panasiuk this weekend.

Really excited about today's adult kickball party at my favorite Huron police officer's house. (Hopefully no injuries this year)
